Hello,

I've just received an email from Amazon telling me that from November 2017 they will stop sending out DVD/BluRays as more and more people are streaming. I'm using a projector to watch movies from my Blu-Ray player, so I'm now wondering how I can handle this change - Here a few questions:

1- when streaming, can you extract the sound to send it to your AV receiver to enjoy the dolby surround effect?
2- I guess I will need to use Prime Video to stream movie to my projector - Is it better to stream out from a tablet or a phone?
3 - which dongle is the best to connect your tablet/phone to your projector?

or should I just buy a new projector/new blu-ray player with internet/WiFi access?

cheers,

Gilles

Or...

I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did, I scrapped it not long after Amazon bought it, forcing users to use their horrible, bloated site for Lovefilm killed it for me.

Streaming movies is okay, but they're not as good as Blurays and the choice is terrible compared to what you'd find on Bluray unless you're prepared to pay per film, it's about £4.95 to 'rent' a new release via iTunes for example.

I use a FireTV it has HDMI and this then goes to my receiver which is my switching hub for different displays (TV projector etc.).

You know that you can still go to an actual shop and buy DVDs, BluRays and such?

Tesco have even started selling Vinyl records now.

Paying 10 quid for something that the 5 people in my house might watch once or might watch fifty times is probably less of a waste of money than paying £50 quid to take the five of us to the cinema to only have the option of seeing it once, during which I will inevitably spend at least 20 minutes in the toilet with children who have consumed a gallon of Tango.
Seems like a positive bargain to me.

Anyhoo... the OP's dilemma was that he was no longer going to receive physical media through the post. I was merely pointing out that other purveyors of the OP's preferred media are available.

Me too, tossers killed a good service. Cinema Paradiso looks pretty decent as a replacement though. Do you use it? Any good?

Have you seen the price of DVD's? Mrs Binners just ordered a stack of them as they actually cost less than streaming the same fillum

I don't use them myself, I don't think I've actually got anything that will play physical media anymore, but I read elsewhere that they seem to be the last player in the market.

I would just buy a cheap simple Android box that you can plug into your AV receiver.
Amazon are a pain though and only properly support their own:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Amazon-Fire-TV-Streaming-Media-Player-x/dp/B00UH2O6T2/ref=zg_bs_199625031_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=S7J0NEQB86MX73QEWG8Q

Still not bad value though and will get you iPlayer/ITV Hub/Netflix etc too.

Seeing as I missed this first time round 😳

Didn't get an email, just a pop-up when I went into the app this morning. Will check out Cinema Paradiso.

I'm going to try Fire TV as Amazon sent me a £15 voucher and, after complaining, will not charge my Lovefilm subscription next month.

We've got Amazon Prime. Iirc it costs about twice what a 2 disc per month Love Film sub costs and has a monumentally crapper range of free/included films, although clearly does have the other Prime benefits.

And to get it to work with the TV properly we had to buy a firestick (was ok on laptop and Xbox).

Overall Prime is good value BUT it doesn't deliver what we want without paying extra rentals.

For balance it used to cost £3 to rent a dvd at blockbuster for weekend 10 years ago so renting an hd film at £5 isn't all that bad in the scheme of things.
