Anyone done it with a baby? Got any useful tips?... Like which bike seat for baby or a dont leave home without tip (like the baby!).
We live in berkshire and im not sure what would be the best logistically ie drive to London & get train back from Brighton the next day as dont think bikes can go on trains on the Sunday?
Both Hub & self have x-ctry mtb but will use road tyres for the day.
Any tips then folks?
Yeah don't be stupid. and let a friend meet you at the other end with your baby
This guy managed the Dunwich Dynamo (120 miles overnight) with a dog.

You should be able to fit a baby in there.
i think you should leave the baby at home,
Always a tad dodgy, the L2B, with a lot of novice riders who will just stop in front of you for no reason. No way I'd take a baby on that ride, I'm afraid.
i think it is not fair on the baby to make it sit in a bike seat for more than an hour ish. it is boring for the baby and completely unnecessary. 🙄
if you cannot get anyone to babysit then i wouldn't do it. the joys of missing out on what you want to do, due to childcare, you will experience this many more times over the years!
We're not doing the L2B to achieve a time... Its a family day out, I have done it before and the idea is to stop every hour or so. We're a good old age, so we're not missing out thanks. I have done the race before, lots of families, kids, Oap's and babies have been there.
My baby is walking at 8m & knowing our baby, we think he'll enjoy it. I was hoping for some good tips to accomplish without any hicups, not parent advice, thanks. I also understand babies change so much & was having a backup plan to abort if the need should arise.
Oh hey guys I'm one of those dreadful self absorbed people who is so in denial that they involve their infant child in their hobbies where they clearly don't belong, but I see them doing it in the boden catalogue so it must be ok am I right guys?

.... Hhmmm i was warned Randomjeremy that you have an opinion on everything ;-)... No need to be rude though hey guys?

i thought that was the idea of this forum
Don't do it. 50 miles + for an 18 month on a bike is unfair.
Haha... Very good!... Mumsnet has it's place & answers useful questions like when to drop a feed etc... When in Rome as the saying goes!
Besides must ask... Whats a Boden Catalogue?
Toodle Pip 😉
Personally I wouldn't dream of doing it with a baby, but if you do, your gonna have to carry one hell of a lot of stuff, change of clothes + toiletries for you both, plus all the baby paraphernalia (nappies, wipes, changing mat, clothes, food, etc)
Also, whatever you plan to carry the baby in, it's going to need to be very, very comfortable for the nipper and also allow for him/her to completely protected from the elements. You'll also probably be stopping lots for attention and cuddles
it child abuse plane and simple.
Geoffj...unfair? Was going for a trial run at cwmcarn, thought i could cable tie the baby to the family orange alpine, until we made up our minds what seat was best to buy....
.... Ok has anyone get any real advice? I'll go back to Mumsnet for parenting advice... Thanks for all your helpful comments.... As I'm a lady i won't say what's really on my mind 😉
And ps.. Ilovemygears... We're talking bikes here!
but asking for advice on taking your baby on a bike ride, is in itself also asking for parenting advice about the event.
you have been given it, but don't like it. 🙄
why would you want to take your baby? do you like to show it off like a new handbag?

I can't remember anything about being 18 months old so have no idea if I would have enjoyed such an outing, but I imagine things like Farley rusks would have got me really stoked rather than 60 miles of slow moving tarmac.
... Yes to both, i use my Gucci bag to carry him around in 😉
Farley rusks..? Absolute NONO! Dont you the know the sugar content 😉

nothing compared to the risk of taking you child on such a bike ride.. god im glad i wasnt youre child...its a child not a pet
If he has a nice sleep most of the way, you'll appreciate his fresh pair of legs helping you up Ditchling Beacon.
I personally think you'd have to be crazy to actually want to do the L2B, it's the worst ride I've ever been on but each to their won I suppose. Taking an 18 month old baby on it however isn't fair at all in my opinion. I have a 21 month old son who loves going out on the bike but am pretty sure he'd hate being put through that.
If you've yet to get a baby seat have you even taken him out on a bike yet? How can you know he won't hate it instantly? Not to mention as already pointed out above, the L2B is full of novice riders will little awareness of those around them so not exactly the safest environment.
I'd seriously reconsider this. If you live in Berkshire why not go somewhere like Swinley Forest and rent a baby seat or trailer and have a potter round the fireroads? It's a much nicer place to ride, you can do as much or as little as your son will put up with, and there's a cafe and playground.
i always thought baby seats were a stupid idea what happens if you fall off..babys ant as strong as a adult and they might get crushed by the bike or get hurt from falling so far so fast
L2B is not something I would have wanted to risk taking my kids judging by the number of ambulance cases
I think putting an 18 month old in a seat for that length of time would be cruel, and unlikely to work.
Our 17 month old went in a trailer round a trailcentre for about 30 mins and he had had enough and wanted to get out and walk.
If you really really must do it then get a trailer, however I think its a bit selfish and more about what you want to do than it being an experience for your child.
As above get a baby sitter or dont do it.
I have no comment to make about taking a baby, however I have done the L2B.
It was rubbish; don't bother.
Dave
I've done L2B +15 times as part of our road cycling club and seen lots of accidents. Most simply down to novice riders not being able to control their bike correctly or not being aware of the others around them. So you might be a great bike rider but most of the +25,000 others aren't. Hence I'd say it would be a unacceptible risk to for me.
To be honest I think it's the above comment that would worry me the most about a mass group ride like that. Could be an irrational fear though, plenty of those around your kids I must say. Are there no local charity rides you could try out first, or are you encouraged by the safety in numbers angle?
Regarding the "cruelty" aspect I don't see how it's much different to a long car journey with a nipper myself. At some point I may have to take a small child to Australia. Now that'll be cruel to the child, us and the other passengers!
To the OP: You asked for advice and then complained when people gave it to you. Everyone is telling you not to do it, you appear to be ignoring them. Why did you ask in the first place if you were just going to ignore any answers you didn't want to hear?
Ok has anyone get any real advice?
You have had plenty...
Doing it with a good trailer might be OK as long as it sleeps most of the time, doing it with just one of those baby seats clipped onto the bike is just insanely stupid IMO.
I've done a forty miler with bike trailer and 1 yr old, on hillier roads than l2b. She enjoyed it because we stopped loads for playground stops, picnics and general roaming around causing havoc. Also slept twice on that ride.
I reckon she'd enjoy all the attention of l2b, but it'd be a boring ride for me so I wouldn't.
