It’s been downhill since Iain Duncan Smith came up with the idea of Universal Credit, under the obvious assumption that everyone on benefits is a skiver who is ‘sponging off the state’, backed by George Osbourne. The intention was to cut the benefits bill by any means possible, no matter how much suffering that caused

I suspect that those two, with their total absence of empathy or compassion in their casual cruelty will look like socialists next to what this lot will presently be toying with.

They’re truly inhuman.

They literally couldn’t care less about the daily lives of the poor and disadvantaged, all they’re thinking is ‘if we can get enough of them off the books then we can abolish inheritance tax’

Thatcher created an underclass by destroying the very communities that enabled working people to maintain dignity, pride and a reasonable standard of living.
The first time I saw a food bank was during the miner's strike.

It's been a 50 year plan by successive governments to destroy, demonise and disenfranchise the working class.
School playing fields, libraries, fees for higher education, prescription charges etc.....

They hate us.

Never forgive, never forget and do whatever it takes to destroy these evil people and their supporters.

Thats a lack of emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence is the form of intelligence that helps with creating interpersonal relationships and consensus seeking amongst other things

Psychologists differ on precise definitions and numbers and types of intelligences but i think most would agree there are many types of intelligences and that academic achievement only measures a very narrow range.

For want of a better source ....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_triad

I'm no expert but I'd guess she's scoring very well on Mach-IV ???

Machiavellianism
People who score high on this trait, named after the political philosophy of Niccolò Machiavelli, are callous, lack morality, and are excessively motivated by self-interest.[32] They view interpersonal manipulation as the key for life success, and behave accordingly.[33] Individuals who are measured to have a high level of Machiavellianism tend to have low agreeableness and conscientiousness.[2][25]

The original published version of the Mach-IV is the most widely used measure in empirical research.[34][35]

Covering whole of dark triad....

High scores in these traits have been found to statistically increase a person's likelihood to commit crimes, cause social distress, and create severe problems for organizations, especially if they are in leadership positions

Is it just me or is Truss struggling to suppress a smirk when asked about benefits during that Sky interview?

She's constantly barely suppressing a smirk. Like the rest of us, she can't believe she's got to be PM

Its pretty obvious that she's going to be getting benefit claimants to foot the bill for tax cuts

Not many are prepared to defend that, but theres that other inexplicably promoted simpleton, the idiots idiot, Suella Braverman

Someone has revealed her true place in the world today...

I do stay out of political threads, and perhaps LT is no worse than Boris was, but that sky interview and the challenge on BBC to LT to say she trusts her chancellor, it’s just incredible. If she didn’t have the energy cap to cite to Beth Rigby, repeatedly, no matter the question, then I think she’d be lost for words..

The bbc link.

Tory conference: Liz Truss declines to say she trusts Kwasi Kwarteng https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-63128448

In any given form of employment, the kind of evasive answering simply wouldn’t be acceptable.

I don’t know why people think she must be stupid? She’s obviously very smart in a Machiavellian way..

Her government is close to collapse after a few weeks. I can't see how that's Machiavellian genius, unless I'm just not Machiavellian enough to realise it.

She looks less dangerous than Boris at this point. He's just as much of a scumbag but managed to persuade voters he was great. Truss is destroying Tory credibility by the day and doesn't appear able to implement her plans.

At this rate we're going to need new words for Roland's song, either another new Tory PM election or a GE! 😆

Well now, I didn't expect that! Camouflaged by other emails....

My Tory MP (Jonny Mercer) sent and email a couple of day ago, I assume to all who have corresponded with him, absolutely ripping in to the goverment.

Towards the end was my favourite "they can do what they like with the whip" whether he means it is a different story but jeeeeeesus!

He put it on Facebook as well. Very damning.

"Of course I have a view on what is going on in Government, and you can guess what it is. You know I will not accept budgets like the ones we saw last week. It is hard watching these rather comedic figures masquerading as Government Ministers sprawling around in the media. Last week my friend had to close his coffee shop. Another had his mortgage pulled. It is deeply unfunny for normal people, and I will waste no time in letting them know in the commons at the first opportunity. I will not support anything that doesn't help the brilliant people of Plymouth through intensely difficult times - they can do whatever they like with the whip. I am your MP, it's a privilege, and I never forget that."

Truss is destroying Tory credibility by the day and doesn’t appear able to implement her plans.

Sir Graham Brady had to go and have a word with her and tell her there was no way she could get her budget through parliament

She has an 80 seat majority. On paper at least

I hope he's cleared his diary because it looks like he's going to be repeating the exercise fairly frequently over the next couple of weeks

I'm quite happy to have an impotent Tory PM who can't get any of her policies on to the statute books

We were safe from Boris because he was too lazy to actually do anything. We appear to be safe from Liz because her own MPs won't even vote for the madness she's suggesting

How long before a vote of no confidence in the government?  It gets worse and worse every time she opens her mouth. Though to be fair at least she turned up for some interviews - which is more than Boris managed.  Her conference speech is going to be amusing, I wonder if the hall will even be full.  It does feel like we're watching the death throes of the government, and as amusing as it is watching them flail around, I can't help but feel it would be kinder if someone would just put them out their misery.

Sadly I suspect the Tory party will survive.  Unless Labour do push for PR.  Without FPTP the Tories truly would be finished.

The assumption that you’re workshy and lazy at best, fraudulent at worst. No empathy, no understanding; you’re just an embuggerance on the state and they want any excuse possible to sanction you, remove your benefits, cut you off, punish you.

https://twitter.com/haggis_uk/status/1577299627749085185?s=21

That there are people struggling even in a “leafy” area suggests to me that she and her party are failing a wider and wider section of society… but no, they “choose” their situation, don’t they. FFS. These people need chasing out of government.

Apparently, even the Tory MPs who went there in the first place (and Loads of them haven't) are leaving today to avoid being collared by TV crews and asked to comment on Mad Lizzies speech, or being made to applaud her through riktus grins on camera. None of them apart from the absolutely unhinged (see: Braverman) want to be anywhere near it

The irony of it is that they're all using tomorrows rail strikes as an excuse for leaving early

I think Lizzies Speech is going to be quite compelling to watch. Pork Markets?

an excuse for leaving early

What, to get back to parliament, or to continue with their break from it? Do we still have a parliament…? Sometimes feels like we don’t really any more, and that government sees other MPs as a barrier. Forget the “feels” bit, we’ve now had two PMs who are prepared to say and act as if they are. So much for democracy.

I think Mad Lizzies' theme song has morphed into "There's a storm a coming " by the wonderful Richard Hawley, a true son of Sheffield.

How long before a vote of no confidence in the government?

I reckon we're rapidly approaching the point where enough tory MPs might vote against her in a VONC. They can't change leader again, and even if they did it would be pointless. Many will want it over and done with so they can escape this nightmare and begin rebuilding. Chances of an election next spring have got to be very high.

Facebook is amazing. I clicked on that Johnny mercer thing and the top comment it shows me is from the only card carrying tory party member I know. I was meaning to ask him which one of the two he had voted for…
Glad I don’t go there regularly

They can’t change leader again

They can change leader again, they have full control of their own party rules. It might look daft, but what are their choices? There must be many already thinking that they can not wait… if they want to dump her and rebuild before a 2024 election. There can be few honestly thinking that they can win another term with her as leader now. But there will be also be few prepared to force a general election this winter. Maybe as few as zero. What’s in it for them? Hang on in there, and they can help choose the next PM. It might be the choice that destroys the party… put it’s a sniff of power to have a hand in that choice.

They can change leader again

Yes I know they can in theory. What I mean is they can't change again and win the next election. They would lose what little credibility they have left. That's why I think a VONC defeat is more likely. The moderates will be calculating that killing off this govt would rid them of the rightwing nutcases and regain control of the party for the centrists. It's the same as when labour MPs were quite happy to lose the 2019 election, and look where they are now.

Of course for that to happen Starmer has to call for a VONC, and there's little sign that he would do so. Think he'd prefer a bit longer to finish off his job of purging any remaining leftwingers from the party.

Sitting politicians really don’t want to lose elections. It’s fun pub talk, but it’s not reality. If they want out, they can head to local posts (see all the Labour Mayors), back to their previous fields, or on into “business”, without an election loss hanging over them. Tory MPs who aren’t already resigned to not standing again will want the best chance of holding onto their seats, and the best chance of minimising seat losses generally. Scraping a minority government may be their best hope right now… but they will want that over a Labour win, absolutely, and they will do whatever they calculate is best to try and stop us having a Labour PM.

Think he’d prefer a bit longer to finish off his job of purging any remaining leftwingers from the party.

Jesus Christ.

if they want to dump her and rebuild before a 2024 election.

Thing is though dump her and march forward with who? The competition she was up against wasn't sparkling. Although the party membership's tastes were out of step with the elected members a little, the MPs themselves were pretty much evenly split between 3 candidates so theres not really anyone obviously ready to step forward and have the party and MPs fall in line behind them.

Apparently, even the Tory MPs who went there in the first place (and Loads of them haven’t) are leaving today to avoid being collared by TV crews and asked to comment on Mad Lizzies speech, or being made to applaud her through riktus grins on camera. The peculiar pattern we have in UK politics is Labour seems to tear itself apart when its in opposition and make it very difficult for themselves to get re-elected. Whereas the Tories seem to self destruct when they're in power. In opposition the Tory party seems to get along with itself quite nicely.

I want to cut welfare spending. We have far too many people in this country who are fit to work, who are able to work... & they choose to top up their salaries with tax credits & the benefit street culture is a feature of modern Britain

<Rant>
There is a tipping point where the loony right become so loony that enough tories can’t even stomach it. We are almost there …thiis week we have had:

Andrea Jenkyns insane invective on Universities teaching ‘Harry Potter’ in preference to ‘Construction’. That isn’t I think a typo for ‘constructivism’ but American think tank for ‘working on a building site’ … which is what Andrea thinks the plebs should be doing.

Suela Braverman’s enthusiastic support for the benefits of empire and jailing and deporting modern refugees and immigrants - generously perhaps this might be Stockholm syndrome …

Jacob Rees Mogg .. 50 years he said it might take for Brexit benefit. What did that mean? It seems that is how long it might take to subvert the regulatory framework that keeps us safe. Drill it all, it is our duty. Frack and burn, it is local people’s duty to want it. The Climate crisis is woke nonesnse - doesn’t everyone realise that God is son the Moggster’s side, and why wouldn’t she be?

But at the top now Trusster**** and Kwasikame … I think they think the applause is still going to come for the not yet fully articulated ‘plan’. So ‘cunning’ is that plan that they can’t tell us yet what it is … but it is like looking at my Labrador looking at food - it .. is .. entirely .. transparent.

Bungs for the rich … and **** the money tree before using the monster deficit as an excuse for stuffing the NHS, the poor (for their own good), and the regulatory frameworks carefully built over my lifetime for the benefit of society.

Surely a Labrador wouldn’t eat foreign cheese .. as … we know … that … that … is … a … (paws for max impact ... you might have seen what I did there) … national ….DISGRACE!

</Rant>

At least once all this has died down we can move on to much simpler activities such as sorting out the Northern Irish Brexy deal, which no doubt will see us paying even more for our goods once we enter a trade war with the EU.

Brexits a funny one though, even if we do see it all fall apart she may make some ground up in the polls standing up for the plucky Brits.

She's doing her best!

Starmer will be in back channel talks with Tory rebels and will call a voc if there is a chance tbe government will fall but imo there is not. 80 Tories to abstain or 40 to vote against the government with tbe polls as they are? There simply is not enough tories with integrity that would vote down a tory government and force an election where they will lose their seats.
