Isn’t Jake Berry delightful?
He isn't known as Jake the Snake for nothing, my local MP, a real career politician.
scratch
I thought the skill in being a politician (if you were inclined to go down this road) was to get this stuff past the public without anyone really noticing – not write and publish a book about it and then 3 weeks after becoming PM start acting it all out page by page
That and the skill of reading the room
Both of these seem to have absolutely past her by so with those two concepts not in the back pocket I don’t hold out any hope for her to last more than months, if that.
Well put
It's utterly baffling that someone has had a supposedly good education and worked in industry can be so stupid! I would love to find out what here former colleges at Shell really thought of her?
I mean we knew bungling Boris was a grade A Flute with no morals and only out for himself & his mates, but he did it with the charm of the school idiot while going about it. You knew he was playing a part in screwing us over while quoting Latin and trying to be a statesman & to a degree it worked as we laughed at it and some worshipped at his alter.
But Truss is just a train wreck, I have a few acquaintances who are of the Blue voting persuasion and they fully admit that the future of their party is bleak and will probably sink further yet as the in fighting continues. They even admit that if Labour are in power then all the cock ups their government created will be used against Labour as though they were the cause! by the incumbents.
I have done OK in life & seethe with rage at those that just say "I'm alright Jack" I've helped out my nephews & nieces where I can. I seem to be the guarantor for 3 of them on their property!
I've heard that people become more right wing as they get older? Not in my case, I have become much more Left leaning & I guess that's from life experiences.
Sorry for the ramble, I'm finding things very upsetting these days 🙁
I’ve heard that people become more right wing as they get older? Not in my case
The issue here is that the Tories are moving right faster than anyone can keep up with.

This is me, too, I'm also quite upset about the last decade or so, particularly...
Scotroutes nailed it.
After today's performances, I think it's probably dawning on Truss and Kwarteng about now that every policy announcement that is unpopular with the public is going to be challenged on air by Tory MPs in the expectation that it's going to be ether reversed before getting to a vote, or risk being voted down in parliament. The Truss PM-ship dead on arrival

Definitely me too. My family did OK when I was growing up in the Thatcher years. It was only when my world view was expanded as I moved away and worked with more vulnerable communities that I saw the other side of the coin, and moved to Liberal, then Labour, and now anyone but Tory.

You have a good point there, my In Laws who get the Daily Mail once a week have an almost Labour view of things these days
fadda
This is me, too, I’m also quite upset about the last decade or so, particularly…
That's very much my experience, after the brexit vote I had colleagues with young children in tears at what had been taken away from kids.
I also was absolutely raging and still am at what my late wife was put through with the PIP "bit of a mess" not what I really said. Never have I felt so angry in my life ever, the people that tried to mow me down with their cars mattered not one jot in comparison.
The utterly contemptible shits that came up with the PIP system deserve to suffer. I won't go into detail suffice to say its a system designed to screw you over.
Subjecting someone with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis that had been given a lifetime higher rate mobility and care award with utterly loaded ridiculous questions is beyond evil.
Yup. My pal with NSwho couldn't walk and had significant cognitive impairment was found fit to work and her benefits stopped. Reinstated on appeal as they usually are.
The system is designed to make you give up and stop claiming and has cost loads of lives. Its deliberately cruel
The PIP system....
I've had first hand and indirect experience of that over the years.
It's amazingly cruel by design and relies on tricks and simply wearing claimants down to the point they give up.
It's a despicably cruel system.
I won't even go into the utter contempt the government stow by expecting people with complex mental and or physical problems trying to explain them to what are in the vast majority of cases are physio therapists.
Yes, physio therapists. Most doctors/nurses etc won't go near the system for obvious reasons.
Sorry to go ot.
Listening today to Mr Kwarteng saying the reversal was "The right thing to do" ,I was hoping one of the interviewers would put him on the spot and ask Why was it the right thing to do?, them follow up any answer with, Why did you do it in the first place then?.

Oh feel free. 🙂
I've been put through this a few times. The first time they actually lied and changed what I'd told them, which went then to tribunal. My tribunal against the DWP was over in under 5 minutes, and they ruled against the dwp and atos.
The second interview- or 'medical showtrial' as its best described, I was pretty peeved by the previous, and explained to the Autism carer who accompanied me that the 'doctor', who was sitting opposite, and i referred to in the third person, was little better than one of Dr Mengele's assistants and should in my opinion be treated the same.
They stopped that medical there and then after only a few minutes and I've not heard from them since. I think in all fairness had it gone on i'd have grabbed them by the throat.
Reading these last few posts really hurt me, that I'm a UK citizen.
We are surely better than this?
It's beyond ignorance, it seems like really evil.
And I don't use the word 'evil' lightly.
How long before the leadership election
I thought there was some sort of rule that once a new leader was in place there couldn't be another leadership election for a year?
At this point it's irrelevant anyway, it's simply rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. The whole party is corrupt and rotten to the core.

I could have typed that, right down to the ATOS bit... Now known as IAS, of course as the brand became so toxic.
Throwing my hat into the "PIP is evil" ring also.
Might be worth a separate thread?
We are surely better than this?
Let’s all hope that we can be.
Everyone should have a listen to Alex Brooker talking about the PIP system if they haven’t got a friend or contact that can fill them in on first hand experiences (most people probably do). They are the means to remove help from people that they need to work, or just live a decent life, all in the name of impoverishing, shaming and punishing them because they think they are work shy. Utterly depressing, and comes from a certain mindset about people who need help.

This applies to the wider benefits system as a whole. Can see Priti Evil's attitude permeating the whole lot of it.
The assumption that you're workshy and lazy at best, fraudulent at worst. No empathy, no understanding; you're just an embuggerance on the state and they want any excuse possible to sanction you, remove your benefits, cut you off, punish you.
Surely that should be "trickle down economics" at it's absolute essence - taxes from the rich paying to support the poorest and most in need during their desperate times, help them back into these high wage jobs we hear about. Nope, they'd rather you just didn't exist.
It’s been downhill since Iain Duncan Smith came up with the idea of Universal Credit, under the obvious assumption that everyone on benefits is a skiver who is ‘sponging off the state’, backed by George Osbourne. The intention was to cut the benefits bill by any means possible, no matter how much suffering that caused
I suspect that those two, with their total absence of empathy or compassion in their casual cruelty will look like socialists next to what this lot will presently be toying with.
They’re truly inhuman.
They literally couldn’t care less about the daily lives of the poor and disadvantaged, all they’re thinking is ‘if we can get enough of them off the books then we can abolish inheritance tax’
And right on cue, in this mornings Guardian…
I’d like inheritance tax to be abolished, says UK Treasury minister

The vox pops from the conference are interesting, the loons are defending the u-turn(s) with the same few lines (apparently it's "strength" not witlessness), MPs are clearly not so bothered about towing the line and are merrily going to defy the whips.
The majority may well be worthless right now.
I think Truss is going to have to learn to dial back the bastardry, it's not that Torys don't want to implement cruel and regressive policies, but most of them just want to do it a bit slower so the plebs don't notice as much...
MPs are clearly not so bothered about towing the line and are merrily going to defy the whips
The deputy editor of the Spectator was interviewed by radio 4 earlier
She said even Trusses supporters are now fuming after publicly defending a policy for a whole week, before being left looking like idiots by the sudden unannounced handbrake turn
Just as she consulted nobody about the policy, she didn’t warn anyone about the u-turn
They won’t be doing it again
Truss on Radio4 now. So hard to listen to. You can hear the effort going into maintaining that new voice she’s learned.
Cruella Bravermann speaking on on immigration at the conference yesterday:
“Parts of the system aren’t delivering. We need to end abuse of the rules and cut down on those numbers that aren’t meeting the needs of our economy,” she will say.
She will pledge to step up efforts to stem the flow of people risking their lives to cross the Channel.
And we thought Priti was evil.
Just as she consulted nobody about the policy, she didn’t warn anyone about the u-turn
Truss - or the ERG lunatics behind her - are trying to use the same tactic that Boris used when making up policy on the fly which was to leak it to the press, see how it played out then take the popular version of it from there.
Unfortunately for them, they've not quite got the hang of the "leak it to the press" part and are simply announcing policy. Not thinking any of it through and, because Cabinet is an army of cronies, there are no dissenting voices or other opinions being aired.
She’s absolutely awful on Radio 4 right now. Dithering, lots of long pauses while the cogs shirt and click, and repeating her robotic soundbites and refusing to answer questions
I’m sure the press officers have their heads in their hands again
Just listening to jrm on the news agents podcast. Dear god he makes my fists itch and what a patronising arsehole
The PIP system….
My Brother who has more or less uncontrolled epilepsy, after a meeting with the PIP, stopped taking his meds in the run up to his review/appeal. It was concluded in 5 mins like @dyna-ti. It's a completely heartless system designed to reduce numbers of claimants.
I’ve heard that people become more right wing as they get older? Not in my case, I have become much more Left leaning & I guess that’s from life experiences.
You and me both. There's not much further left to go before I start embracing revolutionary Marxism. 🙂
Surprised you're not there already, TINA.
Now Penny Mordaunt has broken cover and calls on benefits to be inflation proofed. As she's a cabinet minister that's no longer backbencher dissent.
https://twitter.com/MattChorley/status/1577177068919754753?s=20&t=c6AvoX4X0mGUvHvKfEdjdg
Labours lead in the polls probably translates into a 15% election win (in practical terms)
This would give them a 50 seat majority.
Not thinking any of it through and, because Cabinet is an army of cronies, there are no dissenting voices or other opinions being aired.
It’s worse than that. They didn’t bother consulting or even informing the rest of the cabinet, or anybody else for that matter. They’d pre-emptively sacked the senior treasury guy as they could probably predict his reaction and didn’t want any independent assessments done
The just cooked it up between the 2 of them, sidelined everyone else then went ahead and announced it as policy.
And they wonder why they lack support?

I don't know why people think she must be stupid? She's obviously very smart in a Machiavellian way..
She's crap at debates and public speaking and she obviously knows that.
She was never going to last until the next election, it was always a case of weeks or months and the PM's salary isn't significant compared to what can be made on the side.
I'm sure she's smart enough to have dumped Stirling and rearranged her pension funds before all this and she'll be making far more than the PM's salary shorting the pound.
She was never going to be in power long enough to properly asset strip the UK as Boris was doing...so she's now doing the equivalent of stirring up riots to smash the windows so she can jump in a nick a few TV's and any cash in the tills.
I think the Tory conference is turning into the most wonderful advert as to why not to vote Tory at the next election, which is fantastic. Labour just need to let them crack on for the moment.
Secondly, she is going to U turn on the benefits cap for sure I feel but still try and push through public spending cuts. Both of those will be damaging to her and the party too. The later to the country too.
The Labour conference inferred stability and frankly, hope. There is a real desire for both of those at the moment.
The Tory party conference is just one big cluster fudge as it's a simple reflection of where the torys are at these days.👍
Mordaunt has already made her first moves for the next leadership bid. Collective Cabinet Responsibility has not lasted three weeks.
And a new first to out-Boris Boris
We have a U-Turn on a U-Turn, all in the space of twelve hours
Kwamikasi caved in to backbench pressure and said that he would bring forward publication of the OBR advice and not leave it until 23rd November.
That was yesterday
Today it is back to being published on the 23rd November and he apparently said he'd publish it soon, not soonER
clear?

I don’t know why people think she must be stupid? She’s obviously very smart in a Machiavellian way..
I didn't say she was stupid, she's clearly not daft having survived 3 Governments and got her head infront on this last round to nick the PM spot. She's far from daft but there seems a total inability to play any type of strategy game that would make her political career a few days longer and get her mostly what she wants.
She's just gone in to it like a bull in a china shop, demanded everything immediately without getting more than a few close allies in support of it - that's not in anyway intelligent.
There's a sort of "fiddling whilst Rome burns" vibe.
Mordaunt has already made her first moves for the next leadership bid.
Badendoch & Braverman also staking their claims on the hard right side of things, membership love the culture war stuff!
Tory MPs getting jittery about more fruit loops being picked by membership tho ..

To me she's like a competitor in a reality TV show. The one who stays in the background and lets all the gobby attention seekers get on with making themselves unpopular so that one by one they all get voted off, leaving Mrs background noise as the last woman standing
With most people involved in the last ten years of Tory governments you can think of anyone involved and instantly think of a few obvious reasons why they're an utter and complete ****.
With Truss, she's been a government minister for all that time and other than being unbelievably vain and loving posting staged pictures of herself, I can't think of a single thing she's actually done
Obviously now she's got the top job, she's unleashing ten years worth of pent up unhinged frustration on us all like some kind of insipid, personality-free bond villain
Once again
Intelligence comes in many forms. Truss is clearly deficient in some or e en many of them
Crtical thinking?
Emotional intelligence

I didn’t say she was stupid,
True that was MrOvershoot

She's obviously played a strategy game to get where she is... so lets say she knew up-front she was never going to survive as she's beyond terrible at any type of public speaking and totally lacking in any charisma to get her over it...
She’s just gone in to it like a bull in a china shop, demanded everything immediately without getting more than a few close allies in support of it – that’s not in anyway intelligent.
That totally depends what she wants... if what she wanted to do was short the pound, do some favours for her benefactors and swell her private pensions she's done what she wanted with minimum effort.
Given her demonstrated lack of any morals or political beliefs she's thrown her "employer" (the Tory party) under the bus along with the UK economy but I doubt that will cause her to lose any sleep?

What if she is just totally self consumed and totally lacking in empathy?
Thats a lack of emotional intelligence
Emotional intelligence is the form of intelligence that helps with creating interpersonal relationships and consensus seeking amongst other things
Psychologists differ on precise definitions and numbers and types of intelligences but i think most would agree there are many types of intelligences and that academic achievement only measures a very narrow range.
