Lacking in photographic skill and quality - just a little snapshot of a pair of juvenile buzzards hand raised and released last year.

Taken back in mar 09: the male sparrowhawk came to visit us over the weekend, he sat on the fence at the bottom of the garden for almost 10 minutes! He was keeping his eye on the bird feeders in the gardens to either side. I had the time to get out my good camera and fit the long lens, but even the big lens isn't quite long enough - this 100% crop is the best I could get

We get sparrowhawks through the garden quite a bit, fantastic to watch them chasing something

matthew_h - wish I had the pic of my attempt at capturing a shot like that.

I've got a shot with a splash and a spray of water, but no bird. Way to quick for my reflexes!!

Quite pleased with the little owl on the tap shot. We'd taken pics of loads of big, impressive birds of prey that day but most people agreed that the one with the most personality was the little owl.

Brilliant shots here. I'm getting a bit obsessed with owls recently after seeing a tawny(?) near my house. What length lens are you guys using for these?
Also, anyone know any good places to see some owls in Yorkshire?
Cheers

OWL PROWL

Friday 29th October 2010
- In Search of Short-eared Owls at Aust Wharf - 5.30 - 7.30pm

Meeting point at Aust Wharf relief road.

This new event is an opportunity to visit one of the best sites in the region for wintering short-eared owls. We will take a leisurely stroll along the bank of the River Severn on the Severn Way, and will stop periodically to talk about this nomadic diurnal owl and enjoy lots of photographs from my archive. All the while we shall be keeping an eye out for the first migrant short-eared owls of the year.

It is recommended that you bring binoculars, torch, warm clothing and suitable footwear to this owl prowl, which is not as child-friendly as the other events on this list.

This is a free event funded by South Gloucestershire Council

For more details please contact John Morris at johnv.morris@southglos.gov.uk

Saw this bugger sat on my garage about 18 months ago. Not what you expect in the middle of Accrington.

I'm informed it's a sparrowhawk. Best I managed was "it's a bird."

Apologies for the ropey pic, it was a bit of a rush job...!

Using a bridge camera, i'm finding wild bird pics i right challenge, the wide even on close cropping the pics are poor ๐Ÿ™

Captive birds are a little easier, but i much prefer seeing them in their own environment and without signs of handling.

First an owl that we found in the road, had been hit by a car we assumed, not unusual according to the guy from the RSPCA who collected it, made a recovery after a week but it was weird watching a concussed owl being, odd...

redthunder.. what bird is in the 4th pic down from the top? I took pics of a three birds above the mountains in glen shiel yesterday and i thought they were golden eagles. Your 4th pic looks most like what i took pics of going by shape of wings etc. Not sure if they were eagles though.

4th is Buzzard

5th is Merlin digiscoped. The pile of wood was setup by the local birders [Action Men as they are always in camo when I ride by]

1st is [may] Peregrine that plucked a wader from a mixed flock on Severn.

Martin, they're Tourist Eagles. Common Buzzards in other words. And they are very common these days, often see them soaring right over the centre of Chippenham, and I've seen them over Bath too. Starting to see Red Kites not far away as well. There are some fabulous photos on here, I'm very jealous.
Here's a recent, not brilliant one:
http://flic.kr/p/8wrnKA

Sue, a Peregrine/Saker cross. Somewhere on my computer I've got a photo of one of the Bath Peregrines perched on the church where they nest plucking a pigeon or similar, a little trail of feathers drifting away, but it's not on line and I can't get to it at the mo'.
[edit] dammit, what is it with trying to post pics from Flickr these days, just can't get them to show.[/edit]

Brilliant shots here. I'm getting a bit obsessed with owls recently after seeing a tawny(?) near my house. What length lens are you guys using for these?

I took my ones with a Nikon 70-300 VR lens, but that was at a paid for photo day through Wild Arena at the Hawk Conservancy. It's a great opportunity to get some decent pics.

Some of these are fantastic!

A very lame snap of an owl that forgot it wasn't night time. Often see it in the garden.

Get loads of buzzards and the odd peregrine too.

This one was 130mm @ f/4.2 - 1/4000s (ISO400)

[img] [/img]
And this one was 300mm @ f/5.6 - 1/800s (ISO400)

Both taken using the crappy old version (non-VR) 70-300mm G Nikkor on my Nikon D80.

The one of the eagle I don't have the EXIF data for, but it was much closer as it is about to land on the handler about five meters in front of me. So probably around 70mm.

All were taken during a falconry display at Warwick Castle.

grum: I love that "Angel of Death"-style vulture one.
Moody, sharp as a tack and the burning around it really sets it off.

Nice job!
