strange fault on the laptop, the speakers work when using something like skype or doing the diagnostics but they don't work when playing video back. be it from media player, iplayer or a dvd through vlc player.

Have a look for updated drivers.
If it's a Dell, have a look for WiFi drivers whilst you're at it.
When you say it "doesn't work", do you mean at all? Ie, no sound? Check the Sound applet in control panel, make sure you've not got playback assigned to a MIDI device or some such.

Try plugging and unplugging something into the headphone jack. It'll mute it if it thinks there's something plugged in (ie, the switch is stuck).
And check the mixer (double-click the Speaker item in Systray).
cheers dears. went into the sound applet and reverted everything back to standard which has cured it! didn't know i'd changed it from standard but there we go!
