So, guy who sits behind me seems to remember the lancia delta integrale was, at its time, the fastest (highest top speed) 5 door car. We've been trying to come up with cars that are better, but are falling short. From research, the integrale seems to top out around 140-150mph. The lotus Carlton was a 4 door, as were most of the swiftest bimmers etc. Alpina b3 touring only did 130 - so we're running out of options

So can anyone think of a 5 door production car, pre-1989 that did >140 mph?

*Edit* M5s were only ever four door!

I think AMG did some rocketship e-Class estates back then, but not totally sure.

It could be argued that any number of "specials" such as Bentley or Aston Martin shooting brakes were up there, but they don't really count, do they?

Surely Jaguar / Rolls Royce / Bentley / Daimler have a few?

Early M5, perhaps?

Won't that be a 4dr?

Alfa 147GTA has a top speed of 153mph, with other similarly-engined hatchbacks (130, 135i, R32) being about the same.

EDIT: Where did the pre-1989 come from?!

Not pre 1989 though, are they? And the Alfa seems to be a 3 door.... 🙂

pre-1989 is because obviously these days, theres loads quicker (porsche cayenne, etc).

m5 touring is 92 onwards
sierra cossie is only 3 or 4 door

audi 200 might have it if they did an estate with the turbo engine before 1989 (not clear)

Do any of the Group B homologation specials count as production cars? Thinks like the 205T16 or Metro 6R4 - but they were probably geared for acceleration rather than top speed so might not beat the bog standard Integrale for that. Sooo nearly bought an Integrale in the early 90s, but had too many barriers in my life at the time (literally - security barriers at work & at home so a left hand drive car would've been a nightmare)

Edit - @rse, of course all the group B stuff was 3 door... Fool!

Sierra 2.7 Cosworth? 2.7?

Anyway no 5 door cossies, only a XR4x4 with 5 doors 144mph off the top of my head.

Avants, tourings and volvos don't count, 4 doors and a escape hatch.

GM has the "affordable" crown with the last generation vectra! FFS!
the 3.2 twin turbo would do 165mph. Luckliy we corners in this country so they didn't sell many.
Theres also a 5 door verson of the holden monarno (sP?) supposed to be coming out.

but basically most manufactors has stuck to the 155mph "limit" to avoid EU Restrictions on main stream cars.
Even your M5's are topped off at 155.

Struggling with the 5 door bit....

Plenty of 3 door and 4 door.

Peugeot 309 GTi 16v was goon for 140ish I believe, but rare in UK and not sure if it was in the 3 and 5 door body style.

The ferrari engined Lancia Thema 8:32 had plenty of go 150? but 4 door.

What about the 5 door Ford Granada - wasn't there a Cosworth engined one of those before they went to the fugly Scorpio body style??

I own an integrale (Evo 1) and I think you are being a bit too generous to it here!

Mine is flat out at ~135mph (~220kph), that's max revs in top gear. Maybe Evo 2's with their larger wheels (16" over 15") #might# have a slightly higher top speed but I would have expected the final drive to be adjusted.

The integrale gets it's classic status from the handling, steering and silly turbo characteristics, top speed is not it's thing. Anywhere north of 100mph (private roads of course) i would fully expect to be (and have been) handed by ass by Mk2 Golfs, E30 Bmw 325i, etc they are all significantly less brick shaped! Below 100mph is of course a different game....

The advert from Lancia at the time claimed that the Integrale could out-accelerate a porsche carrera 4.... but then in the small print it says this is only between 30 - 50 🙂

PS. might have the range wrong but it was pretty narrow!

Integrale was classed as the fastest point-to-point car for quite some time, putting it ahead of more exotic/sporty rivals due to it's 4wd and incredible handling. I can't think of a faster top-speed 5 door either at the time - everything else I can think of is either 3 door, 4 door or an estate...

I thought the claim was they were the fastest a-b car on the road rather than just top speed.

It was, as explained above, down to their handling, acceloration and top speed that they could just about mash anything else on the road.

140mph

I think you've done it. 5 doors, 206bhp, and as far as I can find so far 150+ mph, probably due to good aerodynamics......

Dunno what it topped out at, but must be close. 1981 Ladbroke Avon XJ V12. There are more modern versions around too, later XKs and the like.

Speshpaul, read the thread! According to Wiki it was only the 16V and evo versions of the Delta that could crack 140mph, on sale between 1989 to 1993, so the granny was faster!

Not true. There is the Rallye - three door 8v supercharged rally special. They also - available in LHD only - produced a mk2 five door 16v supercharged car. It had wider plastic wheel arch trims and 4wd (syncro) but looked just like a 16v GTi. Had 215bhp irrc and topped out at near 150mph. Was built 89 onwards (again iirc).

ETA: Beaten to it!!

Then there was the Vauxhall mk2 Astra 16v which topped out the wrong side of 150mph. Not sure if it was available in five door though.

309 gti 16v was listed at 143 in the books but if you were prepared to wring it's neck out it would crack 150 easy enough, mi16 was a screamer of a lump.

Did have a 220hp na mi16, all gone now though sniff.

the bx 4tc is awesome

but the non-evo version (which was sold) looks like 220km/h (137mph) top speed - close but no cigar

I think the audi 200 quattro estate or the 307 (if quick enough) is the best bet. the civic aerodeck is far too new

Ahh, Lancia Delta's. Lovely cars, came complete with a rust kit. A mate who part owned a hifi shop did all the car audio fitting, said that he had to clean the rust off the steel under the paint when fitting aerials. Never forget one leg of the RAC Rally coming along the, then, A350 across the top of my road. One of the Lancias came past, making an amazing noise. Then it got out of the 30 limit about half a mile away. I could hear the thing wailing like a banshee for several minutes, so he must have been near Lacock, four miles away. Insane.

Come on lads and lassie's thought you knew your cars.

MEGA FAST CAR EVEN BY TODAYS STANDARD.

Had a good go in one of these 10 years ago.
RS2 could run from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour (62.1 mph) in 4.8 seconds, and achieve a maximum speed of 262 km/h (162.8 mph) electronically restricted)

I thought of the RS2 but it was made in the 90's there was also the 405 t16 which had 210bhp plus and extra 20 on over boost and 4 wheel drive looked just like and mi16 except for 16 alloys.

I think that around that era (and if by fastest you mean top speed, rather than acceleration) then it's probably a toss up between the Alpina B10 BiTurbo, Mercedes E500 or a Lotus Carlton. Certainly not the Lancia anyway

I remember a test in "Performance Car" or some other posh magazine, comparing a Quattro & an Integrale. I seem to remember the Quattro came out top on outright speed, but the Intagrale got their quicker, & out-handled the Quattro. The Integrale actually got lighter the harder it was driven...as bits fell off. 🙂

There were a few mad cars out back then, I had a 2.8i Capri. I remember racing a 1.9cc 205 GTi up the M6 at 130mph after watching Villa play at Millwall, the Capri could just edge ahead of the Pug' until it came to a corner/bend/change of direction >1degree.

Of course all this changed when the Sierra Cosworth came out. I drove an RS500 Cosworth the other night. (On PGR on the XBox).

Drove a cosworth sierra when I was 18. Scared the living daylights out of me. More of an old landrover type now.

These were quick. The CS was the hatchback, 154mph back in 1992. There are still good ones about if you look hard enough. For bang per buck not much will touch one of these.

http://www.classicandperformancecar.com/front_website/octane_interact/carspecs.php/?see=3287

Official top speed of the Lancia Delta HF Int was only 129mph. The S4 was only a 3 door.

I had a 1987 Delta Integrale 4WD (one of the 8v Mike Spence RHD conversions) and no way was it geared or powerful enough to top 140mph in stock form. Chipped and remappped it gained 40% or so in bhp as did the later evolution models, but without changing the transfer gear ratios the power increase was not going to change top speed unless the rev limit was removed - 4th was around 20mph/1000rpm, rev limit 6000 odd but in stock form peak power was just over 5000rpm giving usable approx 120mph top speed - the quoted 143mph would be at rev limit, which I think was a popular trick at the time, possible but not practical.

Was reviewed as a Quattro beater and I don't think any of the non 4WD version were faster - perhaps some of the evolution models which from memory added 16 valves and slightly higher boost in road spec. The 4WD handled well but was a pretty dreadful car from the view point of reliablity and build quality compared to the Audi's.

The Audi 200 Avant estate was around in 87 and that had 200+bhp, 4WD and 5 doors. Much better aerodynamics and I'd say it would have been the fastest 5dr in a straight line at the time.
