Kim Kwan-jin, 61, a former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, replaces Kim Tae-young

to fight against Kim Jong Il, who is being succeeded by Kim Jong Un.

Is anyone on the Korean peninsula not called Kim?

Kim is the family (surname) name, and very common indeed. Like j_me says, they are technically still at war I think. The US can't afford another war, can they?

If they have a war North Korea will start it, the US and SK have been so restrained having had both a boat sunk and the island shelled. You would hope China or even Russia would have a word!

I don't think he'd do that t_m_m, doesn't seem the war mongering type to me.

The US needs an excuse to launch a massive first-strike against NK otherwise NK's artillery will decimate Seoul. It's hard to think of a scenario though that NK could do something bad enough to justify a huge first-strike that wouldn't bring about a reaction from China - I guess NK sinking a US aircraft carrier might be enough, although I can't see the US viewing that as an acceptable means to an end.

South Korea really needs to ATTACK asap. Before North Korea really has acquired nuclear weapons.

If they already have them then the future is really bleak IMO. ****ing really sad.

Ummm North Korea already has nuclear weapons. They detonated one in 2006. Whether they have an effective delivery system is another matter.

The US would have taken out any potential North Korean nuclear facilities years ago if it wasn't for the fact that North Korea has at least 500 heavy artillery pieces locked and loaded and pointing at Seoul.

It would need to be some first strike to take out all those guns before they managed to do significant damage to Seoul

NK's artillery will decimate Seoul.

SK have a f88king huge army aswell, not as big as NK but no pushovers plus they have access to whatever the US develop.

Plus is it really a forgone conclusion China would back up NK in a war, I'm not so sure.

Anyone know where the Russians stand on this? I can't be bothered to look into it, but they hold a small border with NK.

I imagine there is alot of diplomatic traffic going backwards and forwards between china, NK and the US.

The US wont repeat the same mistake as before (rushing towards the Chinese border).

Saying this, there must be real fear on the US/SK side about the NK's capabilities and less to loose as the sinking of the destroyer was more than enough provocation.

I suggest they should resolve their border dispute by having a game of twister - winner takes all

NK also has a space program - I wonder how long it'll be before Kim Jong-Il has some kind of evil lair in space, with death rays pointed at Seoul? 😀

Optical illusion involving aircraft contrails.

I don't think it was.

Airplane contrails aren't vertical, and the way the smoke was shaped it seemed like the object producing it was corkscrewing through the sky. There are a lot of missile launches from Vandenberg and Edwards and they're usually during the "golden hour" (as this one was) and stick around in the sky for a long time. Airplane contrails evaporate quickly, and this thing was in the sky for a while.

And - how come nobody else has ever seen this exact effect before in a California sunset? Lots of planes, lots of sunsets. But this is a first?

I'm relaying comments from elsewhere on this.

It's remarkable how little we know about the inner mechanisms of N.Korea. Obviously, by 'we' I mean the public in general, I would hope that the intelligence services have a better idea of what's going on.

Is Kim even running the show now? Have the Generals usurped him?

Hopefully this can be resolved without a burst of instant sunshine over Seoul.

I don't think it was.

It was. The illusion was only visible in one part of california, had it been a missile launch it would have been visible over a much much larger are.

and the way the smoke was shaped it seemed like the object producing it was corkscrewing through the sky

Or there was blown by the wind. How exactly can you tell how the object moved through the sky from a still photo?

Airplane contrails evaporate quickly

Not necessarily, it depends on climactic conditions.

how come nobody else has ever seen this exact effect before in a California sunset

How do you know it hasn't been seen by plenty of people who said, oh look there's a contrail.

Edit

Oh and there is this quote too

Kevin Martin, a meteorologist of the Southern Californian Weather Authority, also subscribes to the aircraft theory. He told Examiner.com: ‘We see this often when the flights come at the right time, however, some people are just out to witness it at the right time.’

Now granted I've taken that from the Daily Mail website (I'm just off for a shower now) but this guy would appear to know what he's talking about.

I'm no expert, and only posted it for a laugh. But while we're at it.....

How do you know it was only visible locally?

How come there is a passenger plan flying from right to left that isn't leaving a contrail(what ever that is?)

How come there's a distinct flash or flare at the top of the vapour trail? As its sunset then surely this would be the wrong angle for a reflection from an aircraft.

I don't really care TBH

IE6 ? At work ? do you work for the public sector perchance? Surfing the web on work time during these times of austerity and savings. Tut tut.

How do you know it was only visible locally?

All the reports that I read came from roughly the same area.

How come there is a passenger plan flying from right to left that isn't leaving a contrail

Different altitude? Different location?

How come there's a distinct flash or flare at the top of the vapour trail? As its sunset then surely this would be the wrong angle for a reflection from an aircraft.

Why is it the wrong angle? Bear in mine the elevation of the plane, it's not at ground level.

do you work for the public sector perchance

God no. I have however been given permission to go home early due to the inclemant weather. 🙂

Don't see why the people of SK should live in fear and the recent Wikileaks would appear to suggest China may not support NK.

"It's remarkable how little we know about the inner mechanisms of N.Korea"

Fire up google maps and zoom in on NK, then zoom in on SK - quite interesting contrast.

Don't see why NK gets all the blame for provocation. Why did they shell the island? (Not saying this is justified, BTW) Because SK was holding exercises right on the very verge of the border. And the US/SK response this time? To hold more exercises. How reasonable.

SK and the US are deliberately inflaming the situation. Plus I don't believe the Wikileaks story is any kind of coincidence - timing way too sweet.

Well, that's not so bad, what's 1/10th of a city between nations? I mean, look what Bomber Harris did to Dresden.....

I know it was a contrail just because it looks like a contrail, you can take photo's/video of any contrail being formed and make it look like that. I saw one the other day that looked vertical and when you looked at it through bino's you could see a lovely 747..

well now that we know china probably wont protect n korea, infact accept a unified korea under seoul then the american action doesnt seem that bad

I think Jon Stewart summed up the "missile launch" nicely:
There was an interview with the News channel helicopter pilot who filmed the video (he was off the coast and high up which is why not many other people saw it). He filmed it coming towards him for 10 minutes.
"10 minutes?! Wouldn't a missile be in <expletive deleted> Hawaii by now?"

How is it not so bad? What the F does it have to with the US? If they have a role it should be to encourage peace, not to provoke and prod.

well in that a war between the usa & skorea vs china & nkorea would be very very very bad
while a war between s and n korea would only be very bad

If N Korea were sitting on top of oil, the Americans would have yelled "He's coming right at us!" and pre-emptively invaded years ago.

/cynic.

According to Wikileaks, the biggest threat to safety is ****stan's nuclear programme which is currently employing 130,000 people.

The North already has nukes (tested in 2006) and according to Wikileaks they've been supplying long range ballistic missiles to Iran capable of reaching European cities. Couple that with ****stan's not exactly top secret nuclear facilities (that any nut case could walk into and pick up radioactive material), then it all looks a bit bleak dosent it?
I reckon North Korea v South Korea could pick up all sorts of trouble, especially as the US already seems to be involved. Every American president has to have their war dont they- Obama hasnt had one yet!

More worrying is Israel and the rest of the Middle East wanting rid of Iran- and they are a bit unhinged arent they?

Anyway im off to enjoy the snow on my bike- i dont want to watch the news anymore!!!
