Just wondered if anyone has any experience in getting electric ovens repaired? My 2yr 8mth old Smeg oven (a cheapo £400 inc separate hob job) gave up the ghost last night after having intermittent fan problems for the last few months (probably should have done something sooner..).
Looks like the main element needs replaced but I don't think this was the root cause - I'm guessing the fan itself or some of its circuitry (thermostat) is also shot as the oven is hardly heating up now and there is no noise from the main fan. Either way, I'm looking at a new element fitted and the real problem found and fixed.
Big question is is it worth repairing or do I just cut my losses now? There is a light coating of grey soot in the oven too. Oven would only have been around £300 new with a warranty :o(
Goddamn it! Andy.
Give Smeg a call.
Bought a graded range oven of theirs a while back for way less than RRP from an independant retailer. Came with 12 months Smeg warrenty though. 18 months after purchase, but only having used it for 6 months, (bought and stored it prior to kitchen refit as the deal was too good to miss) the inner glass door shattered. Phoned them on the off chance they could send someone out to get a cost for a repair - "don't be silly" says the nice woman on the end of the phone "we'll do that for you for nothing - we'll send someone round tomorrow". Sure enough man turns up 9am next day, glass replaced, oven serviced all FOC and with a smile. Top job. Give them a try and see if they can help.
EDIT: Alternatively, they might tell you to poke it 😉
The grey soot may have come from the broken element. I have changed mine twice and it works great until we put a big goose in at Christmas!
Got my element from eSpares.

Thermal fuse?
Cheers for the advice, will try Smeg I think. Forgot to mention that when the element "went" it tripped out the oven fuse / trip thing in the fuse box - probably no bad thing though!
I've got a brand new Hotpoint stainless steel oven for sale if your interested??
Its still in its packaging, obviously completely unused.
pm me if you fancy it?
Also got a matching ceramic hob to sell too.
Good luck with Smeg, you never know. If it is expensive the element should be easily replaced with a generic one, just take the old one into a spares shop and they'll match it.
Wonder if the root cause might be a dodgy fan...?
the fans are easy to change bud...there are usually no more than a couple of screws that hold the cover and fan in place...then its just a case of connecting the cloips/plugs to the right terminals. put it back togather and you're done
shouldnt take you more than half an hour tops and 9/10 all you need is a screwdriver
Hmm, might just take the burger apart then and see whats what. How dangerous can it possibly be..
Where would I get a new fan? Same place as a replacement element?
Thanks again all!

I have used these guys for parts before - http://www.espares.co.uk/ quick delivery.
I had to replace the element on my oven, was a 5 minute job 🙂
Had exactly the same problem on our Smeg oven, a new element from espares (as per the link above) sorted it, despite me suspecting the thermostat as well. It was a very simple 5-10 min DIY job: remove the door (two catches) then just a couple of screws to undo and two spade connectors to switch over.
Well worth a go before junking the whole thing, and really no need to get anyone else out to fix it unless this doesn't work.
got a new element for ours last week from elemnetman for £25 posted, dear easy to fit. Smeg site has a good list of faults, causes and fixes
(admitted the mrs found it while me and the father in law were looking into the back of the oven with a torch making man noises about it)
