Looking at buying a Kindle or for that matter, any e-book reader?
Its for my Mum, she not a geek, so something simple to use would be great, she wants something to store a number of books on that has a good battery life and is easy to use in bright conditions, chilling on beach holidays.
£100-150ish?

Do you know how easy the 3g ones are to use to download?
I've got the basic one, don't see much point in anything "better"!
Buy your book on Amazon - automatically email it to your Kindle. Very simple.

I never saw the point of the 3g ones. A Kindle can hold several thousand books, if you find yourself away from WiFi with nothing to read then you don't need 3g, you need to plan better.
That said, if you don't have home broadband with WiFi, that might be a good case for going 3g. I've never used it but I believe that it's painless though - the 3g is free apart from emailing PDFs to it, IIRC.
3g is useful if you travel a lot or alternatively if it's for someone without a computer. If it's for someone with a PC who doesn't travel a lot I don't think 3g is worthwhile. I bought the 3g because I'm away a lot and I thought a free access to email however clunky would be useful. I've enough books loaded to think it unlikely that I'll ever download a book while away.
And I'd go with the kindle because it's the market leader and it's going to be easier to access content.
OK thanks for the advice, how long can you go between charges?
She is planning a week hiking trip round Cuba, so accessing a charge might be an issue 😉
A week is no problem at all, even if you're running a reading light off the battery too.
how long can you go between charges?
I usually get 4 weeks of a couple of hours per day reading
They seem to have stopped doing the WiFi only keyboard version, which is what I borrowed to see how I got on with it. I want to get one myself, ayone using the touch version?
Kindle are selling by the truckload to all sorts of people. I suspect they must've done something right with the UI. Thinking about getting one myself when the new one is out.
I had one with the keyboard and fell asleep in the bath with it too many times and now have the touch one. Both are excellent but I never used the keyboard on the old one, so wouldn't bother with it.
All good advice, thanks..
I've got a 3g kindle...only an extra £30 one off payment so couldn't really argue with it.
buying books is a little too easy though...chose kindle
store from the menu, search for a book an press buy. It'll appear 2 or 3 minutes later. I've spent a fortune on books since I bought it, if they gave the reader away for free they'd still
make money.
Admitedly it's my third kindle, damn things keep freezing on me.
I've now got an ipad too, but prefer reading on the kindle.

If you switch off the WiFi / 3g, the only thing that uses battery is page turns. Displaying the same image, it'll last until the heat death of the universe. Actually reading something, it should be good for several thousand page turns.
Charger is the ubiquitous microUSB so will charge from anything.
I've got the 3g keyboard version. Quite nice to be able to get a new book when you want to (on a train, being driven, etc) and always to have email access. Very slow connection, but good enough to get by.
The Kindle screen is the best bit - no problems with reflection, and easier to read even on the brightest beach. Other thing to consider is that you can alter the font size very simply, which my father-in-law finds incredibly useful - can read on the beach without the need for his glasses.
Just ordered her the Kindle touch, which Amazon said would be delivered on the 28th
Did not know it only used power to switch pages - neat. Now just need to stick some decent reading on it for her trip to Cuba.
Thanks again for all the advice.
then you don't need 3g, you need to plan better.
So, tell me how I plan to download future issues of UK newspapers for 99p when I am on the beach abroad?
This is where the 3G version comes into its own as well as FREE email and web access wherever you are in the world.
Something thats often missed, is the fact you can send documents to Amazon and they can be converted for free. Google it, but basically rather than send it to amazon to convert & download onto your Kindle for which they charge you, you send it to amazon you opt for them to email it back you an email address in Kindle format instead. You transfer it to your Kindle via USB - that way its free.
I have WiFi and have never felt the need for the 3G there are just too many places in the world with free WiFi. Especially for your Mum it doesn't sound like she'll be wanting to read PDF's or check her e-mail!

You could download them using the WiFi in the hotel before you went to the beach.
Fair comment I guess; it's not something I'd ever use though, can't think of a newspaper I'd want to read.

Or you can download a PDF printer like http://www.bullzip.com/ for free. Then you can "print" any document as a PDF and just copy it to your Kindle by USB. Very quick, easy and free.

I just bought the basic Kindle for Mrs FD. I was going to go for the Touch but its bigger and heavier and more expensive than the basic one, and just does the same job but without a USB port... as I understand it.
the best think about a kindle is you dont have to hold the pages open, you can just rest it on the arm of a chair for example - sound simple but this is a great unspoken feature!

They claim the battery life is better and it will store more, not that matters much tbh, but yes, its basically the same.
After reading up on them, now tempted to sell all my books and bookshelf and buy one for myself too 😉
I bought kindle touch in the US at christmas
it just works
I fine reading without holding the pages back brilliant - i dont really want to do books anymore

I had been using Miss CDs Kindle for a few weeks and really liking it. I've not been much of a reader in adult life but the format just makes it much easier to be able to read whilst travelling. So yesterday morning I got a nice surprise when a Kindle Touch arrive from me as a present from Miss CD. It's only a tint bit larger than the standard one (can be squeezed into the same case) and not noticeably heavier. The touch functionality is good too, making turning pages even easier and searching for new books or adding comments is so much easier with a touch screen keyboard. The text to speech is clever but isn't pleasant to listen to for long periods.
If I bought a Kindle i would certainly get the 3G one - the free basic web and email access in a surprisingly large number of countries would be a big plus. But the full price only book downloads would be a pain...
Getting a Kindle Fire for work soon. I've had a play with one and was impressed with it.

Huh?
