[Closed] kindle or nexus7?
Looking at a kindle for my SO, or a small tablet.
Is the android kindle app any good?
Is the kindle screen much better fir reading books on than a tablet screen??
Ta
If they want it to read books on then Kindle 100%, the screen is infinitely better than a tablet for reading.
However, if they want to do ANYTHING other than reading (and only wants one device), then go with the Nexus. You aren't going to be getting internet, email, apps etc on the Kindle (well, technically you can get the first two, but you may as well not as they are awful). It would still be good for reading, although the screen brightness isn't ideal if you are reading at night in bed etc. The Kindle iOS app is excellent, and I presume the Android one is similar. You essentially get the entire Kindle 'experience' (page syncing, instant download etc) but just not the reading experience of a proper Kindle unit.
The Nexus does look fantastic. If it were available before I got my iPad, certainly would have been my choice.
Can't argue with any of that. It's like comparing a full sus to a road bike. Both excel at what they do, which are different things.
But U can ride a full sus on the road...
Sure. And you can read books on a Nexus 7.
Would you want to?
Cougars road/mountain bike analogy is pretty much perfect! A mountain bike (Nexus) performs fantastically off-road (the Internet etc), and can also be used on-road (reading) but it isn't the most refined experience. A road bike (Kindle) is unparalleled on-road (reading), but, while you could theoretically take it off-road (the Internet/apps) but it would be a pretty ropey experience!
Agree with the comments above, but to add one additional thing, 3G on a Kindle is free, worldwide.
So while it may be clunky for internet access, it doesn't actually cost you anything.
Why'll the kindle is very good for reading, as good as paper I have been one of many who have discovered just how easily the screens can crack. Mine has always been in the amazon case and looked after, never dropped or sat on but it broke just being put in my laptop bag after 10 months. The problem seems to be that they are made so light that the case is just too flexible and this can lead to the screen cracking even if the unit receives no significant impact.
If your not constantly travelling then this is unlikely to be a problem but If I replace mine it will be with the cheapest model or I may look around to see if any of the alternatives are any tougher.
Kindle reading experience is far superior to other options, and you can read it outside (plus the battery is ****ing magic with 3g\wifi off as it never runs out*)
Nexus has reduced availability at the moment (the 16gb at least)
Buy her a non 3G kindle now and a nexus in a month or two when they're readily available if she moans that she needs to use tablet apps. (Kindles almost always sell in a week or so when put on our work notice board that there up for sale for a tenner under their new price, faster now that summer holiday season is here)
I wouldn't bother with the 3G kindle, I've got so many books on mine that the chances of needing to load a new one on using whispernet (or whatever their 3g is called) is pretty much non existant. If I'm that desperate I'll just go to McD's\Starbucks etc and use their free wifi
* I charge my kindle about once every 3 or 4 weeks at the most. Even lasted me another 4 days when I was away for a week and it started complaining about the battery on the 2nd or 3rd day. E-Ink is the boss when it comes to battery consumption
When is the Kindle Fire out in the UK? I looking forward to seeing what that's like. Seems like a good solution to something a bit more than a device to read books on, as well as doing the books thing well.
Jon1973 - going on tech specs alone, the google nexus 7 has pretty much rendered the Kindle Fire to the scrap heap
Is the screen on the Fire more like a normal tablet then rather than the eInk you have on a normal Kindle? I assumed they'd developed some sort of colour version.

nope just a normal tablet screen.
To continue the bike analogy.
On the full suss you will get knackered very quickly (battery life), requiring refuelling every day while on the road bike you will keep going for about 4 weeks.
+1 to wifi only Kindle for reading.
have seen some people with a pretty good anti-glare cover on their ipads which would make the reading experience better.
so sounds like I need to get the basic kindle for reading AND the nexus 7 for everything else...

It depends. If you really like to read, especially at night, then it's probably worth it (both are very keenly priced, so you can still get them together for less than an iPad or any other Android tablet). If reading is something you would like to be able to have access to without having to carry books around, but isn't something you do a lot then just the NEXUS will probably suffice.
