Does anyone know why I shouldn't do this? I've got a selection of 2 car seats, the smaller one is a standard maxi cosi one sans ISOFIX and I am wondering if it'll go in the middle at the back due to me having a 3 point belt in there. So that I stand a better chance of fitting two (small-ish) adults back there at the same time.

If the belt/seat were to fail, you would be catapaulting Jr out the front window whether or not he went via the back of your head or not 🙂
If it fits, there's no reason not to do it.
My worry is that if we get T-boned she'll be thrown about with a less stable installation. But then again, if we get hit on the side she's sitting -that'd be worse. Or would it?
Anyone know if the seat on its own without the base is substantially less secure than with it?

We can't fit either of our car seats in the middle as one won't fit as it won't allow the seat belt to go in and the other rocks on the seat base as it is rasied up.
We stick ours in the middle. There's a few benefits - it's safer from side impacts - more space around seat to act as crush zone, the little man can see through the front window with no problems so is less bored, and 'cos he's tall he gets a bit more legroom (although my elbow isn't too fond of being kicked)
We don't use isofix in any of our cars and the standard setbelt fitting seems to be fine, only a small amount of side to side movement and if it's going a long way, then frankly I'd imagine that I'd be driving too fast roudn the corners
I was warned not to put seat in the middle because I had a flip down central arm rest that could have come down in an accident.

It's not your driving, it's other people hitting you that's the issue 🙂
Right, Aprica seat goes in the middle with just enough room either side for adults. Its not that secure but I suppose the padding of my wife's relatives should help.
