these are doing my head in now! every day at around this time i get a call which is displayed as "out of area". when i pick up...... nothing. what the hell is it?

Apparently some tele-sales companies will autodial numbers to assertain if they get an answer, then they know you are at home at that time of day. Helps them target their calls.
Maybe.

swines! i have now phoned BT who say theres no way to stop them. best thing to do is just pick up the phone and leave it off the hook for a minute aparrently
