So I saw the news footage of all those people trying to clamber on that USAF jet and I figured the outcome was that the plane stopped and the US Army intervened or something...

Apparently not, as I have seen some footage from the Al Jazeera network that appears to show someone falling from the plane after it had taken off.

Those poor poor people.

Two apparently.

I do wonder what their thought process was when they decided to hang on to the outside of a plane flying to Kuwait. I suspect once they see one person attempt it, someone els tries it etc. Serious wisdom of crowds failure.

Seriously disturbing stuff, we know people take massive risks in tiny boats in rough seas etc. the level of desperation to get out must be monumental. 🙁

already being done in the Kabul thread, not sure we need another but how bad must the prospect of falling into the Taliban's hands be that trying to hold on to the outside of an aeroplane taking off is a better prospect

If you're in that situation, I can imagine it might feel like a rational decision. Certain death if you start, less chance of dying holding onto the underside of an aircraft.

But how awful to suddenly feel like death is that much of a certainty.

I thought 3 or so were killed (crushed) as well whilst it was taxiing/taking off?

Extremely sad to see this, but all I can think is that herd mentality takes over at that point

Sat at home in front of a telly box it appears a certainty that try to hold on to the side of an aircraft is going to only end one way

It’s horrific, that someone is in a position that this seems like a solution, but as above people are crossing the channel in dinghies that are better suit to a small pond.
The people holding onto the plane, I wonder if the ‘plan’ is if we all surround it/hold on they’ll stop. At some point you realise that it ain’t stopping but now you’re between a rock and a hard place. It’s now doing 70, 80mph? Shit shit shit, can’t let go now, may as well hold on and hope. And then the inevitable.

Either way, it’s heartbreaking to see.
