Fifteen and a half years old, a rescue twice over who landed on his feet around 18 months old.

Through the years, he'd survived having both knees rebuilt and spinal surgery. There was no denying he was old, but he was bloody strong. He'd recovered from two vestibular events last year, you'd never even know he'd had them.

However, on Friday we took him to the vets as he seemed off colour, nothing wrong, but you know when your dogs not right. Bloods were taken, drugs were given.

He wasn't right through last night or this morning so we took him to the vets to discuss the blood results and the downturn over the last 24 hours.

This morning, we made the hardest, and at the same time, easiest decision we've ever had to make.

Yep, Well done for giving him a long and happy life when it sounds like it could have worked out quite differently for him.

You made his life a long one, filled with happiness. What more could anyone ask for?

Thinking of you and your family.

Sympathies - I have an old 14 year old. Not looking froward to the same time. I am sure you gave him a good life.

Really sorry to hear that, but you both gave him the love he deserved. He had a great life with you. Love and best wishes, Iain.

Retired our spaniel from proper mtb'ing last year, she now just comes for shorter rides to save her joints. She's now 8 1/2 and I don't know how I am dreading her getting older.

big man hugs and please rescue another and give it a cracking home as soon as you can. We rescued ours at 6 months old and she has been the most wonderful dog and put up with the 2 rescue cats, 1 rescued house rabbit and 22 sheep bred from 2 rescued lambs.

Snif...

Sorry for your loss.

I'm nearer that day than I like to think about.

As you say, you made his little world!

Here's a few of mine and Onza's darling boy. Have the sofa to myself for the first time in over 13 years tonight and it's not a good feeling 🙁

As a young un with sparkly eyes and boundless energy...

And in more recent years after his trail retirement...

And the last one taken only on Thursday evening before he took a turn for the worst

What a beautiful dog. So good that he was able to share so many great years with you both. I've parted company with a few over the years and it never gets any easier. The good news is that there's another dog out there, just waiting for you to happen by so that he can choose you. I wept like a child that had dropped his ice cream with my last one, but when the time was right I went out one day and returned with Bonnie who is snoring beside me on the sofa. You'll know when the time is right, until then take each day as it comes and enjoy the memories

He's very handsome and looks so happy in those pictures! You gave him a lush life, he was loved looked after and what more could he want. Thinking of you both.

Sorry for your loss buddy.

Lost my best friend 2 years ago, but still feel him next to me when I'm out walking. Even now he's gone, he's still my dog.

We do the best for them whilst they're still here, and in all honesty I think they know that. I'm pretty sure he knew just how much you meant to him, as much you knew how much he meant to you.

Sorry for your loss, we lost our Airedale earlier this year after a 10 month battle against cancer. I know the last few days have been hard for you all, but they do get easier, try and remember the good times you all had.

Dude, its a very sad day but you should offer another poor doggie a chance to win the owner jackpot. The new one wont replace your buddy, but he will ease your hurt!

I too have a 2 time rescue hound. Just given her a big hug after reading this.

Sounds like she hit the owner jackpot, don't be too sad, sounds and looks like he had a great life.
