Don't touch the pretty flowers Perchy!
Matt
I was much more interested in picking up the black box from one of the pythons that had been massacred.... 2.8 million ka-ching!
Cor, nice! Where do I find Thargoids, and how quickly will I die? 🙂
Holly off of Red Dwarf has been glumly informing me that my temperature is critical in all three of my ships so far.
Awesome! 🙂
One came down to scan its base, when I went to collect meta alloys from a planet. Very cool, I could watch, but all my power was out.
Matt
I was on my way to check out the black hole in Maia and I was sent a message offering a black box retrieval mission for silly money.
Got there to find a green mist containing a dozen destroyed pythons and a Thargoid scanning the wreckage. It scanned me , scanned a few More pythons and then buggered off.
It was pretty cool though.
I answered a distress call and found similar.
Pants night last night - lost my Python and the Big Pink Anaconda. Might have a night off. 🙁
Rough night! Fight with the rough lads from the wrong end of the system?
Matt
Ouch, that’s an expensive night and you can get quite attached to these ships as well.
I’ve made trader elite so I’ve said goodbye to Borann for a while. Time to try to learn combat, I reached elite in the original game on my BBC so it can’t be that hard...who am I kidding😳
lost my Python and the Big Pink Anaconda
You didn't go looking for Thargoids and decided to pick a fight, did you?
When you say lost Pondo, do you mean you had to swallow a rebuy or you didn't have enough for a rebuy and they are now lost forever?
Just a really stupid night - LTDs were over a mill so thought I'd mine for an hour or two in the Python, wasn't getting much so went to switch to a different bit of the hotspot and got scanned with 60-odd tons onboard. Tried making a dash - no idea what the pirate did (in solo, so NPC!) but it effectively killed almost all control. Feds killed the pirate, I still had 35 tons onboard - spent an hour and a half getting to a station and trying to get through the slot, managed to get through (sideways!) but no way did I have the control to land, everything at 1 or 2%, got stuck on infrastructure alongside the pad and kaboom I, landing infringements put me on the naughty step which I THINK is what they call adding insult to injury.
So, thought I'd take the Big Pink Anaconda out as she's cheery old bird, I put some guns on and signed up for three boom time missions - got inderdicted on the way to the second drop and failed for the first time to avoid it. Cue about thirty seconds of something flashing occasionally across the screen, turrets didn't seem to bother it, and I don't think I ever brought weapons to bare for more than a moment, and about 30 seconds later - kaboom II.
Rebuy's no problem, but bloody hell that was annoying. 🙁
Jesus. I think I’d have smashed my controller up after a night like that!
I’m quite enjoying my explore. No idea which way I’m going as I just filtered the fuel stars and picked a random one 10K LY from Shinrarta. Not come across anything undiscovered yet mind
6A fuel scoops are amazing too. Can basically top up the fuel used on a 30LY jump transiting around the star to the next jump
As I’m only jumping to fuel stars. No need for an extra tank
A couple of years ago I nearly gave up after losing my brand new Vulture in combat.
Of course I was flying without a rebuy and I'd just sold my Cobra to buy the Vulture. All I had was a sodding Adder!
It's the last time i've ever flown without a rebuy!
I swore off combat and saved up for an AspX and went off to explore the galaxy.
Did some work on my shops last night. Got a fighter bay and a crew member for the Anaconda - flew the fighter myself for the first time, that was fun, although didn't shoot anyone yet. Where do you get different fighters from?
Turned my Asp Explorer into a pure explorer build. Small shield, big fuel tank, two SRVs (in case ones gets stuck half way across the galaxy), small shield, tiny cargo and NO GUNS. That last might take some getting used to, but really there's no-one out there to shoot at you, is there? Isn't there?
It's quite light now, has a 40Ly range from only level 3 engineering. Struggling to find the mats for more, stopped off at loads of traders and found naff all.
Apparently there are weapons that specifically cause module damage/malfunction, but that's a badass pirate.
By comparison my night was a success, made some quick progress home from Barnards loop, with 160M Cr of data (yeah, yeah, not even a python full of LTD!). It pushed me up to pioneer (1%), so now I'm trying for a week of promotions. I got interdicted when I hit the first populated system, but it was an NPC, so no issue in the Phantom.
Tonight I'm out in the 'Space Cow' (Type 9), doing some 'trucking' for the Terra-Ex Astro Corp player faction in the BGS. I've based Space Cow and my vulture out near their home base and I'll jump between there and Kuwembaa in the Cobra.
Matt
My AspX had no guns. Felt a bit weird at first but really there is no one outside the bubble to shoot you.

You need to find materials and then you can trade one material for another at the material trader, but you can never buy them.
Encoded you get from scanning ships and wakes and also planetary beacons if you do surface missions.
Manufactured you mainly get from shooting other ships and then scooping up their remains - this is why my combat ships make room for a collector limpet controller. High grade emissions are another good source.
Raw you get from mining or shooting surface rocks in your SRV. If you can't be arsed with a random grind then there is a system about 1,500ly form the bubble with four planets all with different Grade 5 material in huge qtys
@molgrips if you need specific raws I have a list of systems with appropriate geologicals. Some might be 200Ly but less than 1500Ly to the Shards.
No planets for Lead (surface mining should work for that), Rhenium or Boron. Which is annoying since Lead and Rhenium are both class 1 and Boron is a 3, but you could max a class 1 with a single class 5 at a trader.
HGE can be system specific (High populations and boom are good for plenty), Fed for core dynamics composites, Empire for imperial shielding/ I have found improvised components in war states. Still working on the others!
The bigger/better the ship the better the manufactured materials it drops, so no eagles.
Some degraded emissions will also include a private data beacon which will give you data (Ex scrambled emission data, Irregular emission data, modified consumer firmware, etc). Just scan everything you see, it never upsets anyone enough for them to start firing.
Matt
Oh yeah, check the missions. Mission rewards can get you grade 5 manufactured. Since I found mining I either take the REP for the Federal rank or the Materials.
Matt
Ive no guns on my exploring Asp either. 2D shield as well and I don’t turn it on unless I’m landing on a planet. Not come across anything to shoot in the wilderness and if I do it’s 4 pips to the thrusters and boost away
No guns for me on the Phantom. I run 2:4:0 outside the bubble and 4:2:0 inside (4 pips is 250% shield power).
Moved up to double hangar after losing my SRV on the last trip. I found a nav beacon on a planet about 2000Ly out, apparently that's not that rare, but that was the only life I met until I jumped back in.
Matt

Yes but none of the traders I found had anything I wanted. I had stuff to trade.
Current requirement is arsenic and various manufactured stuff like chemical processors. So I should probably shoot some stuff and do some missions to get the good stuff.
I'm keeping shields in case I crash on landing or press circle at the wrong time or something.
I have found Chemical processors at degraded signal sources.
I found loads of arsenic containing planets out at the Rossetta Nebula. The closest I have actually recorded is Coalsack Dark Region JM-V C2-24 (Planet 1 B A). There were 28 signals so should be good. ~480Ly from Borann. For a level 2 Arsenic is annoyingly rare.
Matt
The anaconda is loaded for exploring the bubble.
Despite being a good way away - the thought of losing X nights of data in one little brawl on the way home means I'm carrying 6a shields, 1x huge MC, 2x large beam lasers on turrets with military internals.
I'm at 40ly jump range which is enough for exploring I think.
You can get arsenic from the next planet along from farseer enterprises - there is 2.4% there.
When you say get it from the planet, you mean land and drive around?
Despite being a good way away – the thought of losing X nights of data in one little brawl on the way home
Have you ever been attacked by an NPC whilst carrying no cargo?
Little side question; does anybody else feel a little irrationally bad about abandoning a collector limpet that’s worked hard to collect all your booty when you have to jump into super cruise? I know it’s just a disposable drone, but still...
I do get a bit emotional when there's only one left, and his life is coming to an end soon...
If you were in deep space and having a "Wilson" moment, then maybe.
But otherwise...
Yeah, take your srv, go to a geographical point of interest (use the surface probe things to find whilst cruising), blow up the rocks and shit that are targets and drive over with srv (scoops down).
I'm away from decait, I'm back in open.
Why risk it with 3 to 4 weeks of exploration data?
Totally TOTALLY get the last limpet thing. 😉
For geological and biological signals you see them when you FSS the planets. When you DSS the planet it gives you locations you can lock onto. Each signal will have 20 - 30 'things' that you can shoot to release and then collect in your SRV scoop. The 20-30 bits will be in a 1km diameter circle, so it is quick. Then you can up and off to the next signal. There will be a mixture of bits roughly in proportion to the resources listed on the galaxy map entry.
Matt
i dont feel sorry for leaving limpets behind they are all retards, just some of them manage to collect a few things before they suicide on the side of your ship.
They dont deserve any pitty.
Just been intercepted 3 times on the same little trip, its great in the Type 10 where you can easily tank until the police arrive to help you. good amount of salvage from 2 pythons and an Anaconda.
Anaconda salvage is good stuff usually.
I've just got the space cow stuck in the mail-slot and blown to bits. 6M Cr rebuy and a trip to space jail for the loitering fine, because blowing me to smithereens isn't punishment enough!
Still, I should make 500000 if i dock after 180Ly, so it's not all bad. It was going so well earlier when I got promoted to competent.
Matt
Man, sounds like STW Squadron's woes continue! 🙁
I’ve just got the space cow stuck in the mail-slot and blown to bits
Can I interest sir in a docking computer?
Thanks for the materials tips. I've been visiting all those signal sources I usually ignore and I found tons of salvage materials. I think this might be the calm zen work I enjoy much more than mining.
Feeling bad-ass with my fighter and many guns I just stacked four high pay missions, didn't get stopped once. Pirates running scared it seems 😉
Just tried a couple of pirate missions but I realised that in my ship swapping I'd left my pilot behind. So I took out the competent guy with the help of the rozzers*, but the second one I set my ship to fire at will and had a pop myself Darth Vader style. Pretty fun but still quite hard to hit things with fixed lasers!
* why do pirates even bother in high security systems? It's only going to end one way - and it's not like there's a shortage of anarchy systems.
I’ve got a docking computer on my Anaconda. I have enough trouble getting a Krait through the mail slot, so can’t be trusted not to smash the big boy to pieces
Haha, I have a spare Class 1 slot, so I might well fit a computer. I figured out I was turning too soon, trying to get to the pads close to the slot. All in all I lost about 2M Cr last night, but completed 4 missions and redeemed 240k of bounties for the cause.
It's good to practice with fixed weapons, as some only come in fixed flavour.
I'm hoping for pirates next trip, I'm using the python as a weapon taxi to take 3 large and 2 medium multicannons to Todd the Blaster, so bring it on!
Matt
Last nights effort was a total wipeout.
Collected my meta alloys , mapped loads of high value systems in and around the Pleiades and started the trip back to Deciat t unlock Felicity Farseer.
44 jumps in I was scooping a star and some pirate appeared in a desereted system and started blasting me.
Back in Merope rebuying my ship, lost all my survey data and need to get more meta alloys.
Arse.
Oh no, more STW Squadron trouble!
Perchy, that sounds familiar. I got mugged by a pirate on my way to Farseer with meta alloys that I had picked up in the Pleiades. I dropped out of the interdiction and he just ripped into me. Shields down, modules all over the place, I just got away, but either the scrap or hatch breakers had cleaned out the meta alloys.
Back we go. Have you got a maneuverable ship that can dodge interdiction?
Matt
Have you got a maneuverable ship that can dodge interdiction?
Cobra MkIII.
I stupidly thought it would be a good idea to drop out, take a look and leg it if I didn't think he was easy meat.
I lasted about six seconds.
Well I finished collecting my tea and unlocked the laser engineer.
It took me three trips back and forth 150ly each way - 5 jumps in my Krait MkII. Broo (likes a brew geddit!) wanted 50T of tea. First time I visited the tea station that had 23T. Next time I visited the tea station, again 23T. Back to Broo who now has 46T of tea.
Right one final trip to the tea station but this time I can buy 35T? Honestly it's like the game is trolling me sometimes.
But, I've now got Efficient Beams pinned.
Had fun on the way back to Shinrarta. I got interdicted by a Type-10! He melted quite quickly and dropped some nice grade 5 materials.
Then I had a run in with two Anacondas, who were harassing some poor Type-6, normally when you go after a pirate unless they are in a wing you can deal with them one at a time, but I was still carrying some tea so they both aggroed on me straight away.
I dealt with the first one pretty easily, but the whole time the second one was chipping away and knocked down my shields just before I killed the first one, so by the time I focused on him I had no shields and 60% hull against an Anaconda with 100% shields.
I ran! I dropped chaff and boosted and weaved for all i could, but still took a load more hull damage before I got out of range far enough to get my shields back up. Once I was out his way and my shields regenerated I turned around and dealt with him. By this time the system cops had turned up a softened him up a bit and he went down in a hail of corrosive multicannon rounds.
Got back to Jameson Memorial with 18% hull, a load of good materials and a story to tell down the pilot's lounge!
Spent most of yesterday being a Good Samaritan and answering distress calls...I’m going to have a lot of songs written about me now apparently. This may be a waste of a reasonably kitted out Python 😕
On the way back home decided to do a quick landing on a nearby planet and look for some manganese for Felicity. Turns out landing on highish G planet is tricky. Got down with 3% Hull remaining. Worked out how to find materials though and came away with some manganese and managed to get back home in one piece. Back off to Deciat again now.
Are all the distress calls for fuel? I have answered two and they were both for fuel. I don't carry limpets or a controller, so it was a bit of a waste of time.
What G was it? Most of my landings have been small fractions of G
