@matt_bl & @perchypanther - ah, thanks for the explanation. Makes sense I guess as inventory seems to come with you too. I am kinda tempted to use a few LTD's as a lure to get my kills up though, might do that for sh!ts & giggles. 🙂

Nice tactic matt.

Have all the mining things been snuffled around? Looking for painite and I found some reports on the internet but still not found anything there.

Found a painite hotspot - two in fact - no sodding painite. 24 prospector limpets and nothing. Not really a hotspot, is it?

No, I found exactly the same with single hotspots, absolute balls for surface mining.

This morning I will mostly be recommending wing mining. V8ninety and I teamed up to take on some rocks at Borann last night, a largely one-sided affair! The many benefits i found.

It was certainly quicker than my normal sedate pace as you would literally fly from one 20% rock to the next with no break.

Wing mining is great socially, you can watch your wingman get nerfed by rocks (well if you are V8ninety you can), and just chat away while the rocks hand over their LTDs

Cool pictures

An extra five percent credits at the end (I lost mine doing an elite massacre mission, easy come easy go).

All in all 10/10, will wing mine again!

Agreed. That’s the most enjoyable couple of hours killing defenceless rocks I have experienced. And lucrative, too!

That's V8ninety, in that picture you can't really see his flashy green paintjob. I run 2 but my power never moves from full with 4 pips, so I am planning to try adding another.

If you get close enough, even two 5A collectors can more than handle the two lasers I have.

I try to get very close to the rocks, sometimes with more success. In the python, basically this means nose touching! The the journey for the limpets is very short.

One of the reasons that I don't have sheildless mining build.

Anyone heading over to Borann for a last blast at the rocks tonight? I'm hoping Frontier have a one night only 3M Cr/t blow out to celebrate! For any PS4 players, I will be heading over around 2130, for a run in the python.

Tried the three lasers (added a small), it works if you get close, though if when I am not so close I can maneuver towards the next rock while the limpets clear up.

I've not played for a wee while, but if this is the last night of the Borann triple hotspot then I think I might have to fire up the 'Conda and head over there

Yeah, servers going down at 0730 UTC on Tuesday. Approximately 7 hours, then Carriers everywhere!

I'm waiting for innovative uses for them, I think popular places are going to be littered with them for the first few weeks.

Be interesting to see what happens with the Fleet Carriers.

The two uses the instantly spring to mind are exploration and mining.

Use them as a base for exploration or use them as waypoints for popular routes, there will be probably be so many fleet carriers between the bubble and Colonia that you won't need a fuel scoop.

Mining does seem like the other obvious use. Prospect a new double or triple hotspot outside the bubble then park yu fleet carrier there while you mine.

I enjoy mining but not enough to buy a fleet carrier to facilitate it!

The exploring thing is interesting, jump out to the middle of nowhere and explore/map your own bubble. Maybe as a prelude to a base in the future?

Finished my road to riches at the weekend using Road to riches

If anyone is interested, it earned me around 420 million credits, which took me from 5% on pioneer to elite ranking in exploration.

Have to say though, I’m glad I’ve finished it. I could only manage around 2-3 hours at a time without going a bit la-la, although listening to music helped immensely.

Be interesting to see what happens with the Fleet Carriers.

I'll give it a week before there some uber-gankers who organise an expedition for unsuspecting miners in search of riches to a previously unreachable system full of goodies.

Give them a lift there, wait until they're all off the Fleet carrier, revoke their landing permissions and jump away, leaving them stranded with no way to jump back to the Bubble.

The hour long spin up time for the FSD gives them plenty of time to gloat over the chat channel.

The problem with the Fleet Carriers are that they are only really affordable for the players who have no other challenges left to entertain them, other than griefing other players.

I have to say I had a little twinge of disappointment when I found out that they couldn't be killed!

I am looking forward to people using them for Squadron type events/roles. I see the code's fleet carrier as the 'fish-bait' Red Dwarf!

Still waiting for my T10 and Corvette to arrive in Colonia so out gathering materials and running some missions in the Python i bought out there.
Just come across a a load of stolen goods, if i fly to station with this and gets scanned while docking, will i get blown up or allowed to dock?

You get a fine, I think. I’ve never been blown up by a station but I have had to put up with ‘anonymous access’ a few times before I discovered the point of silent running.

Just line up for the slot, hit silent running until and cruise into station like a stealth bomber...

No worries!

Dock @ >200m/s easy they don't have time to scan you. Easiest if you line up the slot in supercruise first. Just a fine, my record is ~8M credits for about 30M of stolen LTDs.

The problem with CD-52 is the demand, even 200 with my python is ~40% which means the price gets severely nerfed.

Well, I got lucky. Stopped mining at 52t, checked the price at CD-52 557 and it had dropped to 1.1Mcr, went for some dinner, checked afterwards and it had just gone back up to 1.67Mcr, hightailed it over there and got 1.62Mcr for them. Woop. Picked up some polymers en route to Federation space and sold those for 5k/T profit.

How do you line up in Supercruise??

Anyway, it's easy as anything (in a Cobra), I've been running in and out of Garay Terminal with various things. Outposts are a little trickier, you need to land with silent running on then get into the hanger to avoid additional scans. Also watch out for the feds on approach.

Managed to stuff up an entry tonight though, got so caught up with my crappy alignment I forget to ask for docking permission, took about 5 attempts after I managaed to J Turn and get back out before they would let me land!

Also discovered if you scan Orcas and Belugas as they are going towards the box they freak out and jam themselves.

If you watch the hologram of the staton carefully you can work your way around to be approaching from the mail slot side before you drop out. It’s usually (always?) facing the body that it’s orbiting, so it needs a bit of thought. Worth doing though.

It's easier to see it working on the long stations. If you aim above or below as you are approaching for a while, when you aim directly again you will see that the angle of attack to the station has changed. Keep doing this until the station entrance lines up with your ship on the right of the HUD.

I got around 1.2M for 200t last night which was the best for a load that size. 200t was 5% of the demand for the station.

Huh, learn something every day in this game! Dunno if I'll be doing planetside approaches, had a few annoying brushes resulting in drops from supercruise (also **** that interdict you whilst flying by a body).

I'll bear it in mind though.

I occasionally browse PS4 Pros on FB market place as I had originally planned to buy one before getting a slim cos it was a good deal. Made a silly low offer on one, and now it's downstairs transferring data.. Hoping it gets rid of the occasional stutter and maybe looks a bit better...

It's 4k and HDR support (which is useless to me currently) and graphics improvements - more detail and further draw distance in games etc. But I get a fair bit of stuttering in Elite which is kind of annoying at times so I'm hoping it'll fix that.

It's also a second PS4 so in theory I can wing-up with my kids and protect them from baddies like a good dad 🙂

Balls, I was halfway through a wing mining mission. I was enjoying beating the interdiction from some NPC in a 'Conda every time I jumped anywhere.

I'd heard there was a Quad, but didn't know whether it was 4xLTD. I'll have to check my planet with four doubles and see how they've re-rolled.

Rich hotspots should be along way from the bubble. Make it more dicey to get back in one piece.

PS4 Pro is definitely way way smoother and it appears now to be actually in full HD so I can see things like which way ships are facing when they are still a long way off.

In other news, whilst the server was down I did some playing on tutorials. The advanced ones are a great place to get practice with combat flying.

@matt_bl - apparently, latest update, it's not a quad. A double void opal. TBH, stuff is coming in so fast on the feed it's hard to keep up. Jameson's crash site and Dav's Hope are missing too, apparently.

I'd filled the 1 terabyte hard drive without knowing and now I'm waiting for the 10gb install at the busiest time of the day because the update didn't auto install.

Because all the updates were lined up but waiting for space and I didn't realise. A simple - hard drive full message a week ago and this would have been sorted.

Curses.

Why does the PS4 make things so hard to know/find compared to the PS3? Trying to access a usb stick for games saves was a different location to the same usb for music files :mangled face:

When I'm back near the bubble I'll take a look at that triple I found, 1k ly away from the bubble though.

I’ve parked my AspX for the night on a fleet carrier at Borann. Went over to see for myself what had changed. FCs everywhere. Not sure what’s going to happen...will I wake up a 1000ly from home or will I end up floating in space ‘cause I didn’t pay my fare?

I went to the Hyades sector because it was reported in the past that there had been a double painite hotspot and I went to see if it was still there. It wasn't, but there was a single overlapping with a platinum hotspot. However after prospecting about a dozen rocks I started finding painite up to 50% in about every third or fourth rock. Painite can be as expensive as LTDs but I reckon that in this spot it was even more plentiful than the LTDs at the triple in Borann.

Is there some online tool that can be searched for planets with mineable rings close to whatever system you happen to be in?

What's the point of a galaxy wide cartographic organisation if they can't tell you that, eh?

*Not looking for the new Borann. Just need 10 tons of Painite for Selene Jean and don't want to spend days searching systems for it or travelling halfway across the bubble.

I find the presence of this thread very intimidating. Big fan of Elite on the BBC back in the day and I've had it on my PC for about 18 months and not had the patience to learn how to play. The fact that there are 1500 responses is either a sign it is worth my while or there is so much to it that as a very part time/idle gamer (as in one every month kind of idle) it's not worth my time.

You shouldn't.

The beauty of the game is that it's exactly as deep or as shallow as you want it to be.

Just want to fly around and shoot stuff? You can do that from day one.

Want to invest half a lifetime tipping the balance of power in an entire galaxy? That's cool too.

It's the most open ended game i've ever played. There's no real goal and no real end game. Just do pretty much whatever you want.

Some people might be freaked out by that though.

The fact that there are 1500 responses is either a sign it is worth my while or there is so much to it that as a very part time/idle gamer (as in one every month kind of idle) it’s not worth my time.

Honestly - the initial learning curve is relatively steep in terms of working out what all the buttons are for, but for me that only lasted a few hours. Once up and running it was easy to make small amounts of cash and have fun. Sure I got killed a couple of times but that's not a big deal really.

The reason this thread seems intimidating is because we *can* do all this stuff, but you don't have to. You can play the game exactly as it was in the original version if you want.

As for being part-time - you can very easily just pick it up, do a few missions, then stop. The game doesn't actually require any commitment, the projects and goals we come up with ourselves do though! But even then sometimes I just jump in my ship and go shooting pirates for cash. Nothing more to it than that.

I'd say it's an ideal game for a part time gamer, you invest exactly as much time as you want. Initial training missions sort a lot of the confusion out and the training sector is a nice little sandbox to play in. Game it right and you can leave with enough cash for a decent ship.

As above, you can play however you want. It’s the only game I’ve ever bought that I’m still playing regularly 2 years down the line. I’ve got my elite status in exploring and trading, next one is combat. I’m in no rush though, so I’ll take a little time researching decent combat builds, maybe do a little engineering and take it from there. Quite looking forward to it.

Is there some online tool that can be searched for planets with mineable rings close to whatever system you happen to be in?

https://eddb.io/body

Then look for pristine metallic rings for painite, then ‘detailed surface scan’ the rings when you are there, looking for painite hotspots.

So if starting afresh - keyboard and mouse, gamepad or joystick for minimum learning curve, maximum enjoyment if you were starting again? Don't currently own a joystick but if the way ahead not adverse to buying one.

I never bothered setting up my joystick and play with mouse and keyboard.
If I was fighting other players or using fixed weapons I would go stick but have to much stuttering to even consider trying that at the moment.

Mol, how are you getting on with your PS4 pro? It’s what I run, so I have no comparison. I still got a little bit of stuttering in very busy game environments, but I’ve recently discovered ’boost mode’ (in the system settings) and it seems to have made a significant difference; I recommend trying it.

Me too. I bought PSVR thinking mistakenly that I could use it for Minecraft and Elite, but it was only £120 used. I don't own a PC gaming or otherwise, so that and Oculus Rift would set me back at least a grand. But still....!!!

Mol, how are you getting on with your PS4 pro?

It's better, I seem to have higher resolution and it's way the hell smoother, but I can't see a lot of extra detail except perhaps on planets. I've seen 'quality' and 'performance' mode in the settings but not sure about boost.

It's been an expensive thread for me as I decided to get back into gaming after 20 years so bought a new PC (already had an old MS Sidewinder joystick 🙂 ). I'd recommend a few YouTubers; Down To Earth Astronomy, CMDR Exigeous, Obsidian Ant, The Yamiks (a bit sweary). I saw the game described as a "second job simulator" - made me laugh, kinda feels that way.

I decided not to play last night with the updates going in. Just updating my E:D now, I'll hopefully unlock the permit to Sol so I can swing by Earth. One thing I saw last night that looked like fun was Exigeous taking a small, fast ship and racing down canyons on Pomeche 2C.

I wonder if anyone would fancy sparring? As in, fight for real, in our ships, until someone calls quits so we avoid destruction.

after a bad start i really like this ship now, it help having engineered the shield quite a lot (still a bit more to do) its quite nice being able to jump into these mission spots and take on a whole group of NPS pirates
