My 10yo daughter brought this home from after school club as part of an advent calendar craft project. I'm wondering what context I'm missing that explains this any other way from what it seems?

No. They came from another community group apparently - must have just been a bulk purchase from some online outfit.

I've no idea what it's all about (some social media nonsense probably), but a quick Google of Capybara & knife throws up lots of similar images. I had absolutely no desire to delve any further, but it's clearly a thing.

I'm sure that Google will enlighten you, however I suspect it'll confirm for you, that it's probably not suitable for a 10 year old's advent calendar.

Asked google. Apparently it's as below 🤷‍♂️

The image of a capybara with a knife is a specific internet meme that humorously contrasts the animal's naturally calm and peaceful demeanor with the implied threat of violence or a "hostage situation". It has no traditional symbolic meaning.

Origin and Meaning

Meme Culture: The image likely originated from an edited picture of two baby capybaras, where someone added a knife to make it look like one was holding the other hostage. It is a play on the animal's widespread reputation for being "terminally chill," friendly with all animals, and generally unbothered.

"hostage"? Looks more like rape at knife point to me. Or is that just because there are so many murder mysteries on TV.

Its just a kids meme thing juxtaposing cute creatures with knives/ violence
https://postimg.cc/v1kpWCH1

Edukator is right tho, the positioning in this case is a bit unfortunate 🙂

The 11 year old saw this lovely mug on holiday and immediately loved it. image.png

Translated it means something like "I slept little; today I choose violence". I think it's romanticising coffee rather than knives.

Give it a year or two and exposure to school whatsapp groups, you'll yearn for the days when you thought cute animals with knives on merch was problematic.

I see they've got the mug for what the young violence lovers exchange for their sheath knives when the grow up above.

That's what I thought, and it's not that huge a leap of imagination (is it?!)

No. That’s what I thought it was.

”Just a kid’s meme” has started me wondering whether the Australians have it right.

I’m going to guess that it started with Among Us. a video game that became popular in lockdown. It’s not for children but the characters are cute. And to think people used to worry about drugs thst looked like sweets.

could you elaborate on what the Australians have done, please?

Social media ban for kids.
