We've had the renewal through for the upcoming year, for our six year old cross.

Last year it came though at £684. I rang up, lowered the cover level etc and got it down to £564.

Now, same cover on the reduced cover amount, the premium wanted is £747.06

we are in a bit of a pickle as flo has had a previous claim for a neck tumour and if we move insurer, that wouldn't be covered if it comes back.

at some point we have to say enough is enough as JL now seem to be taking the P from initial premiums of £170 odd quid as a puppy, no doubt to snare us, and relentless increases thereafter without seemingly much justification.

i get that as the dog ages, the possibility of claiming increases, but surely they know this, and could make the jumps year on year less significant.

i reckon, next year, it will be a grand.

£130 to insure the car fully comp. Doesn't make sense.

Terrible rant I know, but also looking for thoughts.

Insurance is about risk. You are now more risk that and they know you will take a hit leaving.

Time to work out the risk of the previous problems coming back.

Private medicine for animals costs the same as humans, and you've had a previous claim for something that could well reappear on paper.

Sadly insurers know that a bit of sentimentality goes a long way on the bottom line.

It's your choice to buy insurance, it's not compulsory.

They're not charities. They are in it to make money.
And they have you by the short and curlies.

JL is just outsourcing to a proper insurance company. As above thats the reality. From my understanding of per insurance the max claim is generally set at something like annual premium * life expectancy of the pet. As such you may as well not bother imho.

Hope may have been restored.

"Lifetime Pet Cover" (the name of the insurer, not the type), and who seem to get good reviews, can offer £4000 of vet cover annually for £19 a month.

and it would cover the previous illness as Flo has been symptom free for over two years.

ill ring in the morning to make sure I've not misunderstood but for that level,of cover, suggested by our vet, that seems wholly more realistic.

Hope diminished as the previous illness would not be covered as she would still be deemed “vulnerable” to the neck tumour returning.

Renewed with John Lewis but reduced cover to £3500 annually and £350 excess for £400 premium.

I suspect, next year, it’ll be £1000 premium for £3500 of cover and that’ll be the tipping point.

Self insure instead.

Is that £3500 per condition or £3500 in total over the year?  You should have a cooling off period and so it may still be worth shopping around if you are happy to have the tumour as an exclusion?

£3500 per condition per year, so renews* every policy year even for existing conditions.

*although JL have reserved the right to not offer renewal terms, so I’d imagine that if we use the £3500 one year, we won’t be offered renewal.

currently paying £57 month for 12yr old westie Archie, never had a claim ever. What value on a family member?
