just downloaded and installed itunes cos i got given an ipod.

it did its 'search for music' thing, and for some reason every file is in there twice.

why?

i don't have much music stored on my computer, and there are 218 songs in itues, and i only have 109 on there... all i want to do is copy them to the ipod, but i don't want to un-select 109 songs as i do it.

if only the ipod used a drag and drop file transfer instead of stupid itunes 🙁

if you right-click on each song you should be able to see its properties.

I'm guessing that one copy is an MP3 and the other copy is iTunes' own format

I'm not sure what you'd do about that though. iTunes on my PC has only done that to 2 or 3 of my albums so I can kind of live with it

It may be that the tracks have been added to the library twice. In which case you could go to the music library and sort by date added to establish this, or click on the find duplicates function. Alternatively you could delete the whole lib ray and start again. Just make sure you don't delete the files from the computer 🙂

You could have just gone File>Display Duplicates, then it shows all of the duplicates only. Then you can select them all and delete them. Be careful when some songs have the same name, that you don't delete them as well.

You could also set up a smart playlist using certain properties to separate them. Once you know your way around iTunes you'll find there are lots of easy ways around organising music in iTunes. There's nothing wrong in having duplicates, especially if they have different properties; for example you can have a smart playlist with all the music at a low bitrate, like 128k, to put into a Shuffle, and a second playlist with everything at around 320k for using with an iPod Classic.
