... and I keep seeing people reading the thing on the trains every day, but is "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" actually any good?

Wife currently reading it (also bought the 2nd one) and she says it's very good. My turn once she finishes.

It is supposedly a bit slow in places, the second is even slower. It was/is a very popular book for those who like adventure mysteries/ Bourne-esque books.

I'd say borrow it off someone.

Takes a while to get going, but then it gets really good. The 2nd book is much better (girl who played with fire), but obviously you need to read part 1 before part 2. Struggling with the 3rd one now, think I've had enough of reading about the skinny cow.

very slow start - got into on holiday - am now on third one. Pace is not that of a usual crime thriller - or of a thriller come to that

I thought it was very good. Read all three in quick succession.

I'd disagree. I felt the 2nd motored along from start to finish.

Hundred times better than Dan Brown's writing. But still schlock, as said above.
Read the first one pretty quickly- only lost interest for a few days once. Second one took a month or so and several goes. Third is still unfinished.
I normally read a couple of books a week.

There you go, it's stw, little chance of a consensus unless it's about problems with the fairer sex.

I watched the film at the weekend subtitled in English. I thought it was great.

I was on the beach in Exmouth at the weekend. Looking for the girl without the dragon tattoo was harder.

They're good enough, they rattle along, there's a bit too much "aren't I a great freelance journo, all the girls fancy me" for my taste, as a holiday read you'd probably not be disappointed

Just started it. My sister had all 3, read them and said she needed the shelf room so didn't want to keep them. Not my normal genre but it is ok so far... I'm about 30 pages in so only walking up the front drive so to speak.

I don't think I've ever enjoyed a book that I've seen large numbers of people reading on trains. Snob, moi? 🙂

My wife's comment was that it's "just another crime/police book, nothing special" - and she should know, she reads enough of them!
