Chipps on Twitter: STW just broke through the 1 million visits a month mark. And at the same time we passed the 400,000 unique visitors a month mark too!

I can't imagine that more than 5% of those actually post anything, though?

400,000 unique visitors? That's a lot of cyclists...not many stay though.

More likely 400,000 unique IP addresses. So, if I connect from two different IP addresses in any month (e.g. work and home), that looks like two unique visitors.

Given the amount of mobile internet activity these days, the actual number of cyclists will be a lot less.

I posted a photo up earlier this week from my flickr account. The thread wasn't very popular (got about 10 posts I think - mostly from me) but my flickr stats show the photo viewed over 500 times from here!!

I reckon more of them post on here than actually ever go out and ride a bike

The South Manchester Massive has 60 odd members. How come I've only ever met ten of them then? The ten I go out riding with on a regular basis

'Massive' is such a dumb name for a group of old people with a loose association with bikes?

Maybe they're embarrassed by the name of their 'club'

i imagine gyms have several thousand more members than they could ever accommodate for similar reasons.

all you non-biking lurkers, stop mucking about and get out on your bikes - minimum 20 miles this weekend, no excuses. report back on monday. 😡

the name is purposefully tongue-in-cheek.

not a good turn of phrase when you consider what goes on in the clubs "home turf" around sale water park

40% of all members of a gym actually use it

I could easily be 4 unique visitors, possibly 5, in a month

work computer, my laptop, gf's laptop, work blackberry and own mob.

Hang on a mo. 400k unique visitors and 1m hits means that each visitor only hits the server 2.5 times. That's surely not even enough to view the homepage..?

Do they mean 1m unique VISITS instead? I was under the impression that hits meant server requests - that is, the page of text, then each image is another hit etc. So there could be 10-20 hits per page view on a typical site. Unique visits could mean page views.. but even then the numbers seem odd unless there's a load of caching going on. 400k page views makes more sense since most heavy users must make a good couple of hundred page views a day..?

no, 1,000,000 visits means that the 400,000 people visited 2.5 times each. Page impressions would tell you how much activity they did whilst here...

That's 1 million visits per month and not page views. If a user returns to the site after 30 minutes of inactivity, that's a new visit. The unique visitors is much like druidh and nedrapier said above, except it's cookie-based so works per computer, not per IP address.

For additional context the forum received over 1.5 million page views last week (that's someone reading a single forum page), and we usually serve over 2 million ad impressions per day.

Oh.. misread that 1m as hits rather than visits. That's a hell of a lot for the few hundred folk that seem to post. Crazy.

When you connect from your mobile and Blackberry, you'll likely have a different IP address each time. Might be the same situation with your work computer

Most people are browsers. Not everyone who reads the site (and most of the traffic is on the forum) feels the need to post - or has an opinion on whatever topic. They're just after finding out the, ah, wisdom of the people that do express a preference on here. 🙂

Perhaps theres a "How to Win friends and influence people" type course which references STW for examples of the wrong way to do it?
