Went to get a nice white uncut bloomer from Tesco's yesterday and was faced with nothing but pre-sliced bread in their bakery so I got the attention of the in-store baker and enquired about non sliced. The response was very disappointing. Sorry mate we only do the sliced now as too many unsliced loaves were going to waste... This is now Tesco's stance on their fresh bread....WTF!! I want a 2" door step slice with my cheese on toast or scrambled eggs you swines. It's a freeking out rage and a scandal and I'm not impressed and will be noting this to the duty manager if I see him tonight when procuring my nightly cashe of beer.

Just use 4 slices.

Excuse to put in extra butter to bind into doorsteps.

Go to Morrisons instead, they have unsliced loaves. Probably cheaper too

I thought we were talking about bread sandals.

Sandals

But yeh my local Coop were marking down all the unsold bread and hadn't baked anything new the other day, I guess demand has dropped now folk realise there is no way they can eat all the food they've bought.

They're all busy using up the sacks of flour they panic-bought.

Not very STW. You should be baking your own, or maybe at a pinch, visiting an artisan bakery (but only to support a local business, not because you can't bake)

That's not very STW, you should be making your own artisan sourdough bread with flour from an Italian mill. It should be cooked in a wood oven obviously with wood from your own coppice

Edit - beaten to it, must type faster.

I think tesco are simplifying ranges to make stocking easier.

No fresh stuff in Lidl either, probably for logistical reasons with fewer staff.

Shame, fancied a baguette.

It's hard to sell bread at the moment.

People are busy munching their way through their stocks of toilet paper.

Local bakers or Aldis sliced bloomers for us.

We do have several kilos of bread flour and some yeast in the house though now

My giant local Tesco still does unsliced loaves, although only in the fancy section I think (which probably just means someone swirled the top a bit differently and threw a dusting of raw flour after baking)

Lidl are bagging up croissants and Pain au chocolat in 3's. I've just had to buy 6 of each rather than the usual 4. Not good for my waistline, especially as it bikini weather

toilet paper is probably more nutritious than supermarket white bread anyway

Use peanut butter combined with some riveta to create a sort of ply-bread. The added bonus is that it might well be the first actual use* for Riveta that anyone has ever found.

*Unless you count virtue-signalling post-Xmas diets.

Only a basket case would do that.

"Lidl ftw for decent bread"

Have to disagree there. They don't do a bloomer style white or any other. They only do a round loaf which is too small for a decent sarnie...we also have a Lidl in close proximity. I asked the store manager and was told there's no demand for it!
Unfortunately no local bakery though as the big supermarkets drove them off.

Same here too, all pre-sliced.

I wouldn't mind but their machine is always set to 'Rizla paper' 😡

Our local Tesco seem to that on the deli counter as well (when it’s open - that’s another story! )

They seem to slice up loads and loads of cold meats then leave it sitting there drying up rather than slice it to order like most other supermarkets do.

(That’s when it’s open - closed mon to weds or something like that, even before covid. Means everyone has to buy more packaged meat From the fridges and more goes in to landfill)
