Ok. Its a 500mile round trip. Drinking at his first and not actually going out anywhere till 11pm. I'm a serious lightweight (he knows this). So I'll end up driving a 500mile round trip to effectively arrive 6pm, drink and end up in bed by 1am for a drive back the next morning. Is it worth the hassle? I wouldn't mind if it was summer (its Brighton)- stop over on the way/spend longer there but the seaside in winter. Plus my bikes in bits.

Am I out of order?

Is it a major birthday? 18, 21, 40, 50 etc?

If not, sack it and blame the snow

I wouldn't. Why can't he at least make a weekend of it, given that folk are coming that distance?

37th birthday. I'd love to go but its a long way to drive to get there, drink then go home. Petrol etc etc. I've just found out I need brand new forks which is an additional expense.

He is a mate so will understand.
You'd hope so- but he'll kick off. Hes not been up here once since we relocated 7yrs ago.

Have you said you'd go?

Personally I'd be more cheesed off that you asked on a forum.

Fair enough then make your excuses as you'll probably spend as much time on the M25 as you would in Brighton and maybe suggest a weekend in the summer to go down.

I wouldn't be going if it was me. But I would said that right from the start I would think.

If you said you would go, then you should go.

Brighton was 250 miles away when the arrangements were made presumably 😉

Just wait until he rings you to ask where you are, then tell him you've

a) Gone to Edinburgh instead
b) Already been to Brighton earlier that day and gone home
c) Run out of mustard for your lamb

That'll sort you.

Really though?

Just go and get hammered, better than staying in all night.

You've never been bothered about not turning up for something before. Just do what you normally do. Put your voicemail on, and refuse to answer any texts and emails 😉

Haha. 'Where are you' (eh?). We are at the start of the ride waiting for you.

Erm I'm in the centre of Edinburgh right now.

😆

Plus I was supposed to borrow the Bro in law's Leon FR - the insurer says 3rd Party only and I really don't fancy 500miles in a Citroen C1

Actually.... you do actually look really like a more portly George Michael. Possibly even more than you look like Benny Hill.

Shall we put this to the vote?

Anyway.... He's spurned me. He's going out playing with his cosmopolitan southern friends instead. I'm just his bit of rough

I`d go if thought itd be appreciated ...

HOWEVER - The fact he cant find time/be arsed to make the effort and drive North speaks volumes - 7 years is a long time.

Bestmates birthday night out

and

Hes not been up here once since we relocated 7yrs ago.

Are you sure about the first statement?

I've known my best mate for almost 30 years. We live 200 miles apart. We both have families and we both have jobs involving working away / long hours. We make a point of getting together twice a year; once at his and once at mine.

Friends are important and you need to look after them.

Sounds to me like your already decided your not going (dont blame you) and just need a good excuse. Perhaps change the thread to something seeking for the best excuse? I had someone drop out of my engagement party with: "sorry we can't come the cat has worms and we think the toddler has eaten one" it was backed up with an MMS of them in A&E and everything. Proper pros.
