Its a lease car, so I took it to the local Kwik Fit 3 weeks ago. They said it was ok.

The tyre is still within the legal tread depths, but this outer edge has suddenly started wearing very quickly !

It almost looks like the tracking has gone out, but I haven't hit any potholes or anything...

The car is due to go back in 4 weeks time, so I'm not that concerned about getting tracking etc sorted as this will just be hassle for me.

Around town driving will do that to a tyre , considering it's at the end of it's life anyway I would'nt be too upset over it.

Yes it may be technically legal, but good luck stopping in a hurry in the wet. If it's tracking then the other side will be the same.

Its worn through the tread onto the body of the tyre (hence the change in colour) which could make it look worse than it is. I would get it replaced sooner rather than later and just check the wear on the new one in case alignment has gone out.

I'd focus on is it safe to drive around for the next 4 weeks? If not then buy another tyre.

If it is, then will it pass the 'handover'? if it will then...

I wouldn't bother with the tracking or anything, that's the lease companies problem, although if I was putting a tyre on now, I'd have it balanced/tracked.

If it's only one tire that looks like that I'd be looking at wheel bearing or suspension or bushes being gunned.

How you deal with that on a lease is your bag but for sure that will get worse quickly.

Is the tyre fouling on any part of the vehicle? If not then it will be ok. The wear is legal; you can check for yourself see the MOT inspection manual - this outlines the minimum criteria a vehicle has to be to be deemed roadworthy.

It may be a tracking issue as car tracking is independently adjusted per side, but looks more like an issue with your steering geometry i.e camber angle. Possibly caused by worn bushings, it may be worth getting it looked at to see if there is anything major.

Either way I doubt you will die, just don't want to get stopped by the feds for having an unroadworthy vehicle.

Funny you should say that. From only about 6 months old the car made a knocking on the front right hand side front when going around corners to the left. (opposite side to this tyre)

I took it to BMW a number of times and each time they said there was nothing wrong. Each time I said I had not had similar noises on cars unless they were 100k + and had warn bushings etc.

I had a mk4 golf that went from this state to the inside edge being to the carcass in one 200 mile trip.

Mines was on the inside of both tyres which made for an expensive trip to kwik fit for what ever they had that fitted......

when i got home i went to the garage and got it checked - the camber had been set to let the car go round corners by the previous owner - when it was put back to stock the car was horrific to drive. Had it put back as was and sold it.

I'd be contacting the lease company and getting it booked in sharpish with somewhere that can provide a courtesy car.

The main benefit of the lease scheme i am on is that repairs maintenance is relatively hassle free, no worrying about sourcing tyres and getting fitting for the best price, call them say whats wrong and get it booked in.

If you happened to injure or kill somebody while driving a car with a defective tyre the Police might go for a manslaughter charge.

Back in the real world that tyre is rightly or wrongly legal , an advisory on mot at best.

Hiow ever in 100miles time is anyones guess.

Id certainly swap it out.... Or in the case of a lease car swap it on to the other side 😉

What's the spare like? If it does have a spare and it's in good condition, couldn't you swap it over?
