When out walking the dog I listen to podcasts and music via VLC player or BBC sounds on my Android phone. At the end of a podcast it's stop and get the phone out, unlock phone, find another podcast to listen to and set off again. In summer it's fine, but when it's cold, wet, windy and I've got gloves on it's a pain.

Is there a smar****ch that will control these apps? I can find ones which will skip tracks and change volume but not let me search and select from my downloaded files.

Usually walking where there is no phone signal and not interested in any other smar****ch features.Ideally don't want to spend more than £50. I use either wired or Bluetooth headphones.

Thanks!

It doesn’t answer your question, but is there a “play next” option on your podcast app? There certainly is on the Apple app. Means you can line up the next one before you leave the house.

I agree with Lunge, I have my podcast app to play the next episode from the same artist, if there are no more it then stops.

I have a garmin watch which will control play/pause, skip track and volume. I also had a Apple watch which did the same, for £50 I dont think you'll a device that will do it second hand, I am prob wrong here though

Is there a next track button on the headphones? Many have them.

I think the Huawei Watch GT will do this. About 50 pounds on eBay.

Is it possible to 'queue' playlists in Spotify? I've not tried it, but you can with albums. You could just queue enough playlists to play to get you round & they'd play one after the other...

Looking at Spotify on my phone now - find a podcast, select the 3 'more options' buttons you have the option to 'add to queue', so chances are you can just do this.....

Or - if you go to search at the bottom & then choose the podcast category, there are podcast playlists which will potentially keep you going for hours....

I don't use Spotify, most of the podcasts I listen to are BBC Sounds based. You can set it up to play the next in the series, but I listen to about a dozen different podcasts with a new episode each week, so at the end of the podcast it just stops. When it stops I want to be able to choose which podcast/music I listen to next depending on the mood!

I'll have a look at the Huawei watch but I think that'll just work with Google Music??

I'm really surprised that there doesn't seem to be something I can just pair with my phone and effectively just control my phone like a remote control. Maybe I'll have to invent it and make millions!

Thanks

I often use Siri for this sort of thing E.g. "Play the most recent episode of the No such thing as a fish podcast". I can activate that either via my watch or headphones (long press the button).

I can do it directly off my Apple watch too, but the interface is a bit too small to be useful.

I'm not familiar with Android, but I think they have the same sort of Siri assistant thing?

EDIT: I missed the part where you said you often walk in areas without signal. Where do you live? 2010?

Scotland. One of the nice bits. The broadband rattles in at a blistering 0.5mbps as well.

🙂

I live in north Wiltshire, there are places with no phone signal, and even the centre of Bath has no signal in some areas!
The whole of the UK does not have five-bar 4G coverage.
I’m with O2, their coverage is as good as anyone’s, but all networks are patchy.

If you're having to take your gloves off to use the touch screen on the phone, you'll have to do the same to use the even smaller touch screen on a watch.

BBC Sounds is set to launch on both platforms later today (as well as the Amazon App Store) and as well as making it easy to listen to live shows, it'll look at what you listen to and tailor recommendations for other audio from the BBC.

It will also work with Apple Watch if you’re using it on an iPhone, but there are currently no plans for it to come to Wear OS watches.

So, apple watch?

Ideally don’t want to spend more than £50.

Oh. No, then. You're not going to find even a basic watch with mobile connectivity for £50.

You want a smar****ch, that's not a smar****ch, for £50? Expectations and reality, many many miles apart.

Just that Siri can’t do very much without phone reception. Basically just play, pause, skip. Very basic.

I have downloaded the podcasts!

I'm just looking to find a way to choose what I listen to next, out of the various podcasts and music stored on my phone without having to dig the phone out of the pocket inside my jacket.

It's inside my jacket to keep it warm and help battery life and so the headphone cables route up into the hood.

It's pissing down, blowing a gale, minus 10 and I'm 800m up a hill.

I don't want to open my jacket and take my gloves off, but I do want to be able to choose between The News Quiz, Tuffers and Vaughan, or Iron Maiden to stop my stupid brain having stupid thoughts when it's not distracted. I thought that in a world of self driving cars and smart kettles that would be quite easy but apparently not!

Anyway, thanks for trying, it is appreciated 😁

If you have a look at the various fitness bands from Huawei, Honor, Xiaomi, Samsung or Amazfit there are many that will control music and probably come in under £50.

If you can splash out a bit more (£75?) Then you can get an Amazfit Pace, or samsung active watch that will also store and play the podcast files!

The samsung active are cheap on ebay because samsung flooded the market giving them away with handsets as a freebie. I got two on ebay, brand new. One at £65 and the other £75 making a best offer.

How about using a dry bag to put the phone in and attached to outer clothing, you can then use the phone with gloves on.

No, TBF I don't think your fenix will do what the op wants anyway, which is basically to act as a browser on his wrist. For 50 quid.

Now, now, play nicely!

I was looking at smar****ches on Amazon this morning and there's about a million for less than £50. I assumed that as I don't need GPS, oxygen sensors, erection sensors and the ability to connect to my fridge that at least one of them could select an app on the phone and make noise happen in my ears. It appears I'm wrong. I might drop an email to Bill Gates and Elon Musk with a request 😁😁
