...because you'd never know!

I've not seen a single car with stick on flags, no George flags hanging from houses, barely anyone sporting England T-Shirts - and even the pubs round my way seem half-arsed about it.

Has the football bubble burst? Or do we all accept we're not getting past the group stages! 🙂

Maybe traditional England supporters are so 'anti-woke'/racist that they won't support England any more over the kneeling thing.

Same here in Germany, complete lack of the normal visual signs that a major tournament is about to start, guess it is due to lockdown. Maybe the flag manufactures and sellers have been experiencing supply problems.

No point celebrating the international football if you can't cram shoulder to shoulder into a dingy boozer to watch it before having a scrap because your team won or a riot if they lost is there?

It's not like club football where folks are actually invested in someway.

That would be quite hilarious.

Apparently so, but unlike previous episodes, notably 1986, 90, 96 & 98 when I was one of the eager anticipators/joiner-inners, I couldn't give 2 hoots anymore. Top level pro football is garbage in my opinion (not that that counts for very much I know) and just downright bloody boring. Cricket is going the same way too for me. This makes me quite sad.

I played amateur with his dad. Oh how that makes me feel old!.

Aye, always wondered about the difference with rugby. Your average footy fan isn't really interested in internationals, the average rugby fan seems to be the opposite.

Please let it be so.

Not a chance, even after a year of telly football, season ticket sales are massive.

Massively fair weather fan here, IF I have the time, AND there are beers in the fridge and ideally mates over and wife isn't watching sexy-teenage-vampires AND I am physically unable to ride bike instead, I would usually enjoy sitting down to whatever international match was on, in fact I was more like a rugby fan, found internationals more interesting.

But now with Covid and half empty stadiums etc. it's just a bit ersatz. Also has there been a lot more football on telly recently? It feels like they've just crammed all the tournaments and matches into what is left of the season, total overload.

Its weird I actually quite like football as a sport and a spectacle I just utterly despise all the tribal bullshit that goes with it, particularly in my part of the world.

As a result I quite like international tournaments as most of the tribal bollocks is turned down a couple of notches (yes its still there but its at a more tolerable level)

Has anyone answered the OP's question yet? Is there a major football competition starting this weekend? I'm curious because I've seen lots of football themed groceries, but not a whisper about it on the telly.

Err yes - special arrangements were made so fans could get to see games because of the Covid you mentioned.

It feels like they’ve just crammed all the tournaments and matches into what is left of the season,

Well yes, because of the Covid mentioned above.

I think it was a rhetorical question. It's Euro 2021 which was postponed from last year. Starts with Turkey vs. Italy on Friday.

Given that Ingerlund only managed to beat Romania by one penalty on Sunday in their last warmup match, they're likely to get stuffed. Again. (in my very much non-expert opinion)

I’m very much club over country these days. Born in Leeds so I guess that makes me English. Although I do have Irish blood in me too.
Having watched three seasons of Bielsaball, I’m afraid Southgate’s brand of football is just downright dull.
Hope Kalvin has a good tournament and comes back uninjured, but really don’t give two hoots how England get on.

To answer the OP's question,I believe there is a footie competition starting later this week.
If it was possible to have less than no interest...

Yeah fair point, I got the tone of my post wrong, I just meant that because of all the extra (perfectly valid) football on telly recently, I had reached overload and wasn't especially excited for the Euros, which was sort of the point of the OP's post e.g. lack of hype or excitement over the Euros

Probably for the best. It's bad enough 2021 bikes come out in summer 2020, having 2021 football tournaments in '20 is just silly.

That's because, in this country you can go to jail just for saying you're English.

I usually watch most of the European and world cup games but as Ireland have the worst team since the ice age I'm not too keen. But lots of good football to be played but I'll probably prioritise my riding.

I'm so intrested in football these days, I couldn't even tell you who is in England's group and whether Wales definitely qualified (I think they did). As the years go by, I'm watching decreasing amounts of pro footy, used to watch MOTD every Saturday night decades ago.

... If I'm in, bored and remember, I'll stick matches on in the background.

when - not 2020, maybe 2021 any bets on the final getting moved or even just not happening
where - nobody really sure, but that might not matter as nobody knows if they can attend, and if the can do they want to
pubs - cant see it working so well with social distancing regs
fanzones - as above
televised - who knows, is it BBC, ITV, ITV4+2+1, Sky, BT, Amazon, Youtube

the criterium de dauphine was easier to get into this year

All the matches are on either BBC or ITV.

I'm not really a football fan but I'll be following it. At least until the Tour starts.

Have you been in a taxi recently @Drac? 😉

The lack of hype this time around could well suit England. Although one win in the group stages and everyone will be comparing us to Brazil '70.

How have you avoided the BBCs dire cartoon adverts for it?

Didn't think it was just me who wasn't very interested this time. None of my friends have even suggested a get-together on Sunday. Or they may be doing it behind my back! 🙂

I'm no expert but I don't think that's an unreasonable comparison. Brazil in 1970 were a brilliant team with so much potential but also didn't qualify for the knockout stages of the European Cup.

Technically correct is the best sort of correct. 🙂

Must be pure luck. Actually, come to think of it, I can't remember the last thing I've watched on the beeb except a bit of Breakfast. That might have something to do with it.

turns out the beeb are listening and have answered a few of my questions.

i honestly know better than to read the comments - but i couldnt resist a peek

A friend once suggested that a tournament is organised to decide the winner of football forever, thus rendering any further tournaments unnecessary.

I'm definitely down with this, I think that it's a fantastic idea.

No actual football fan gives a toss about International football. All it does is provide the opportunity for your star player to pick up an injury that will keep him out for half of next season

I bloody love football and will happily watch every Premiership game, but if there was never another international game played ever again I’d be delighted. No more pointlessly interrupting the ‘proper’ season to go and play some meaningless, tedious friendly against San Marino

Once again the moronic Engerland ‘support’ are busy being a toe-curling embarrassment to the nation with their celebratory racism. Same old, same old. At least we won’t have to watch these ****-wits smashing up foreign town centres this time around.

For what it’s worth I’ve bet on Engerland losing to Croatia and Scotlandshire and failing to get out of the group. The football they play is absolutely dire!

I could say that about a lot sports I don't like such as that giant scalectric that Hamilton Lewis does.

Quite so, and it definitely never happens in club football.

My main problem with international matches is that the football is rarely good to watch.

The only time I’ve ever heard flagrant overt racist chanting is at an Engerland match at Wemberley. I’ve been going to Old Trafford for decades and never heard that shit.

We all know the clubs with the nobhead meathead racist supporters and there’s a huge crossover to the Engerland support, and it’s yet another reason why the supporters of other clubs who tend not to have racist nobheads as supporters want **** all to do with it .

England shouldn’t be so dull to watch when you look at the attacking options: Kane, Sancho, Foden, Rashford, Grealish, Sterling. But they are. Southgate is caught between a rock and a hard place due to their dodgy defence and goalie. They’ve all got massive clangers in them.

There's also the fact that as previous England footballers have expressed, if they perform badly/make mistakes they will get hammered by the press and pilloried by their idiot supporters. The whole circus around the England football team is horrendous. It feels like they often play with fear/weighed down by expectations.
