I just received a PM! I thought this technology didn't exist on STW. Has The New Forum finally arrived? What other amazing things are there?

It's like it's 2004 already!

PMs have been here for a while.

They are badly implemented.

New forum is still coming.

Current ETA is unknown.

The whole f***** website is badly implemented - not just the PM function.....
But apparently the forum is provided "free of charge to registered members..." so you shouldn't expect a properly functioning site at all let alone any time soon 🙄

you'd think given the number of subscribers we'd have a decent forum eh?
I'd love to see the ability to upload pictures as part of the susbscriber package.

I dream of a button that takes you to your last read post.

But hey, on the bright side, there's no signatures that you end up accidentally reading a million times as part of the main text.

Care to provide us with links to fora that are better laid out and better to use, 'cos frankly, I've yet to find one.
Most are just endless lists of general subject titles that you have to wade through to find something relevant.
And it is free of charge, I don't pay anything to use it, yes, I'm registered, but that's a requirement of every forum, doesn't cost anything. This is the only forum I've ever spent any significant time on, because it's a hugely varied site with an enormous amount of combined knowledge, and is frequently hugely entertaining.
I think I first registered in 2003...

It's in the pipeline. I visited STW Towers a couple of months ago and got shown an insight into the forum, despite looking basic it's massively complex under the hood. "Just implement a new forum" is as gross an oversimplification as "why can't we just leave the EU?"

I doubt that photo hosting on STW is going to happen; it's a conscious decision not to. It's not a decision I agree with, but I understand why it's been made.

The shear number of complaint posts on here goes to show how bad it is and thats not counting the rogue ads ones.
They can't get it running right with paid subscriptions, ad revenue and a staff (when so many others can do it right as a hobby/owners club/fan base/etc) - so I won't hold my breath over how long the "pipeline" is.

Whenever this comes up (it's happened on UKClimbing as well) the moaners are asked to provide a link to a forum that meets their criteria. I've yet to see one provided that is anywhere near the quality of what they are complaining about.

So come on Jamie, let's have a gander at a "good" forum. Also how about you explain *why* it is better.

Bah, moar moaning about the forum.

It is, what it is. And that's a simple framework for posting. It's had its issues, but its members and subscribers have moar issues.

Don't have a posting count please, dear god it'll just be endless full stops in a thread.

I'm a member of a surfing forum (and Aussie one) and they have a grade for each poster/member based on how long and how many posts.. currently I'm "Sydney" because they think that's for beginners and tourists 😆

Its been in the pipeline for a long time though Cougar.

Sure. It's been spoken about for a good long while, it's a long-term goal but but hasn't happened for a number of reasons.

You have to understand that this site is peoples' livelihood, and that a minor change can have a massive impact on the site's viability. A little click here, another one there and suddenly they've lost thousands.

New forum software is a paradigm shift, and done incorrectly could be catastrophic. You hopefully can't blame them for being twitchy.

Reason I dumped the P

Yes, and we've discussed this before. You vocally dislike the forum every time this discussion crops up, yet you still use it regularly. I'll concede that it could be improved of course, but STW must be doing something right?

I want a post count.

We already have one, I thought? Maybe not publicly visible, I'm sure there was a thread a while back where I was retrieving that data. I'll have a look when I've finished eating.

Hey, I started the thread in jest. Didn't intend to start a moan-fest. I actually like the forum the way it is. Used to use a popular music forum that was great until they 'updated' it. Then it was rubbish and everyone left.

Careful what you wish for. Like the awesome local pub that's been the same for years and then gets 'modernised' to look like a crap cafe. Rubbish.

And please god no post-count. That would be embarrassing.

There's some lack of function yes but there's some that aren't needed. Constant bugs and crashes is a maissive overstatement, yes there's a few bugs but I've never had a crash.

There's never actually that many complaints the rogue ads ones are the biggest complaint but this is often beyond the forums control and cost Mark a huge amount of time to resolve and often at quite a financial loss.

The beauty is you can chose not to have a P that's your choice and you can still use the forum.

So come on Jamie, let's have a gander at a "good" forum. Also how about you explain *why* it is better.

I never said they were better as forums. More they have better functionality like:

Quote buttons which quote text of posts, or multiple posts
PM functions which you don't have to dive into the profile to find
Mobile platforms that do not cut down the limited functionality that is there (truncated posts threads/page numbers/last poster)
Likes/Kudos
Thread subscription (email notification of replies etc)
Ignore function ( 🙂 )

I am aware most don't give a shit about this stuff, and it's never going to change, but in previous threads I have given links to what I see as a decent forums which keep a nice clean look but have all the functionality of a modern web forum

http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/adaptive-stw/page/8#post-8169264.

But here's a few links, not sure how much will display properly if one is not logged in.

https://community.spotify.com/t5/Content-Questions/Slayer-Final-Six/m-p/1900291#M19079

The problem is everyone is so defensive. Any suggestion that we could press quote on a post and it would automatically add the quoted section, rather than pissing about with copy and paste, is met with the sort of reaction one gets after shitting on the floor in Waitrose.

@monkeysfeet - really? Having never visited the site (we don't have kids so never had a need to) I had a look.

28 top level subjects 😯 Let's click on one, oh! there's a dozen options. Find a thread with lots of replies (3000+) - pagination is limited to first, previous, next, last plus a selection box to enter the page number. Mums must have a stunning memory to remember which page of a thread a particular post is on. Presentation of messages is little different to here (I'm not registered remember so there may be extra options available to registered users.)

I'm not saying it's bad but there's nothing there that makes me think there's anything missing from here.

Let's have a look at another forum. The FRA forums are a typical vBulletin based forum. Each post has the poster's name, level/status, avatar, location and number of posts taking up screen space.

While these forums are different, I don't see them as being particularly "worse" to view or use.

@Jamie

Ignore function

Quote functionality could be useful but given how it gets used on other forums it gets misused with people quoting huge posts (or worse quoting a post that includes images so the images get repeated twice or three or four times)

PM functions: just how often do you PM anyone? I've done it about three times. Why use screen space for a low use facility. YMMV of course.

I'll give you the mobile view.

Likes/Kudos - this isn't Faecesbook.

Thread subscription - hmm, I get enough emails as it is. Better would be a personal sticky list.

Ignore function - I thought there was one for members.

Careful what you wish for.

I'm reasonably certain that whilst the software may change, the format won't for reasons I mentioned earlier.

Yes, it's worse than it was before.

There was an urgent business need to implement the mobile site and fast, due to external influences. Whilst it's not ideal, it's impressive that it's as functional as it is.

As I see it, part of the problem is that the day to day maintenance of the site is a full-time job in itself, so that doesn't leave a lot of time for development.

I do idly wonder whether there's a kind of catch-22 going on here. People cancel their subs and / or use ad-blockers because they believe the site has issues, the net result is that there's less revenue to pay for development and a greater need for more adverts.

Quote buttons which quote text of posts, or multiple posts

Nested quotes are the spawn of Satan IMHO. It renders forums unreadable. Quotes are useful as an anchor to what you're replying to, but you don't need the last five comments in your post because people can just, y'know, read the bloody conversation. It's right there on the thread. If we have to have nested quoting I'd want a hard limit of two. Eg,

I said something.

I replied.

Deeper than that is madness.

PM functions which you don't have to dive into the profile to find

I'd agree here, it does need to be more visible.

Mobile platforms that do not cut down the limited functionality that is there (truncated posts threads/page numbers/last poster)

Again, agreed, but as I said it was an emergency measure.

Likes/Kudos

Absolutely.

*likes*

Thread subscription (email notification of replies etc)

Not something I'd ever use myself I don't think, but I can see its value.

Ignore function ( )

Nah, more like when you're addressing several posts. I agree with the nested quotes thing.

I probably worded it badly.

You can do that through the plugin someone of this parish wrote.

So one has to install tamper monkey/greasemonkey and then run a fairly old script when a simple built in solution could work.

This is the crux of all this. The forum works, it does what it does. It's just that it could be improved. I am aware I will be shot into the sun for this heretic thought. And the way some react it's like I have called there missus fat, but for those of us balls deep in the web it's just a bit frustrating having to use workarounds.

Sometimes I wish we just lived in a world of cougars.

The official STW line is that this is a family forum.

To my mind, it's more about atmosphere. I'll cheerfully call a mate a See You Next Tuesday, but if I walked into a pub full of regulars who were bellowing it across the room at each other I'd think "this isn't a friendly, welcoming place I want to spend time in."

@ Jamie - a "reply to" for each post would make sense along with a reply to thread at the end of the current posts. When you do reply to a post then your post contains a link along the lines of "In reply to ..." Get round quoting (and deliberate misquoting or partial quoting)

Edit: I've seen exactly one forum where a "like/dislike" functionality makes sense - StackOverflow. But then it's far more of a question and answer type forum than a discussion.

I don't think it's a secret but I don't fully understand myself. It was something to do with Google moving the SEO goalposts, you have to have a mobile site or you can stick your rankings up your yahoo. I think. Could be way off the mark here.

(Two puns in one paragraph, get in.)

It wasn't adaptive. Which I think Google checks.

The mobile site was the desktop site, only far away.

I'm always happy to stick up for STW towers when it comes to the forum but the current mobile view thing is absolutely shite. Its only possible saving grace is that it forces up the click/page count as it's impossible to get to the last page in one click.

Why would you need a mobile mode anyway, I thought everyone just surfs STW at work?

It is pretty dreadful, I avoid it if I can.

I like the mobile version now, but other than stw the last forum I frequented was the virtual blarney and occasionally b3ta.

Still haven't learnt to post pictures, mainly as I don't want yet another thing to log into...

It works for this befuddled 41year old, been on here for a long time on, I miss the chap in the top left hand corner and the forum stats in the mags 🙂
