Now then!

I need 'advice' from the STW massive.....

I'm in a rut at work.....know the job inside out, know the customers, not much room for progression at the mo and am bored senseless, so much so, i'm looking at whats going on elsewhere. I have my appraisal with my boss on Friday. Is it ok to tell him that i'm bored, i'm no longer challenged by the work and i need more stimulation....or should i just keep schtum and ride it out??

Shite topic i know, but hey....i need some help!!

Over to you boys!

bored is "negative" aka bad

go in with positive ideas that interest you, far harder for it too be seen negatively

HTH

disclaimer: the above advice is obviously rubbish 😉

Umm, I would avoid using the word 'bored' to be fair, they may not take kindly to that, I take a more, 'I feel I've got a lot more to give so could we explore some ways I can get involved in xyz....'. There must be something else you can contribute to that would look good on your CV?

If you are having appraisals you must be working for a reasonably responsible company (many dont do anything like) and the reason for them is to make sure you are challenged and giving your all the company so yes its the right place to bring it up but just not the way you described above - and definitely do not tell them you are looking elsewhere!

Bored - NO
Not Challenged yes if you can back it up that you are ready for more responsibility etc. If it's a big company see what else is going on.
Explain that you are full competent in your role ask what else there is you can take on, any of your bosses responsibilities? Look at those above and work out which parts of their jobs you could do.

Nothing wrong with trying to progress just have th phrase it right.

Remember you will be cheaper than some of those above you!

Edit - Failing that just get caught looking at Monster etc all day

Not quite in those terms. is there anything you could take on to make it more interesting? Developing new stuff / finding new customers that sort of thing? Make it a positive thing - I am seeking new challenges and thought this could be useful to the company

See what they say in the appraisal. They should have picked up on it, if not, how are they appraising you? Have something in writing so that when they comment you can respond with, "yes, I agree. Here are some ideas I've put to gather so I can develop further/take on more responsibilit/diversify the company". Then they know it's not a knee jerk bluff in response to getting rumbled.

I would. But then my first IT job was at Time Computers, so I've spent most of my career being a bolshy little sod.

Repeating what's already been said, you have to say *something*: s/he'll notice that you're not as enthusiastic as you once were, and if you don't say something it leaves it open to interpretation.

However, definitely it's better to talk about 'wanting a fresh challenge', 'wanting to be stretched' and so on - even wanting to think about where your next growth opportunity is.

"I feel like my time is being under-utilised"

"We really need to start pushing my personal time-envelope"

"I think I'm just being given the low hanging fruit"

"There's extra bandwidth that you're not using"

Any of those might sound better than "I'm bored" and you'll sound like a very 21st century, greensky thinking guy. 🙂

BOFH or PFY ?

Neither back then, TBH. It was the baptism of fire that is the Helpdesk.

I've been both PFY and BOFH in other jobs since (I have a ready supply of BOFH tales and I'm available for weddings, funerals and bar mitzvahs).

The first time I got "bored" I didnt do anything about it and had a mini-mental breakdown.

I quit shortly after.

The second time I got bored I quit before I could have another mini-mental breakdown.

Im now self employed and could not be in a better place.

Life's to short to short change yourself on the most valuable thing you have: Time. Three score and ten on this earth, and Im buggered if Im going to waste it sitting on my arse, keeping face time for some disinterested organisation, doing nothing of any intellectual, mental or genuine financial stimulation to me for a minute more than I have to.

This morning I turned down my invite to my annual review on the grounds that the last dozen have been a waste of time and consist of 90 minutes of corporate drivel and discussion of all the negative aspects of my performance.

Normally my boss would be round to my desk in seconds. Today nothing.

not much room for progression

If that is the case play the game as above and keep looking elswhere. How many others are looking to "progress" and are you likely to be able to get ahead of them?

Wife has to do this type of thing, currently writing her own atm. She has 2 managers under her and a staff of twenty. My wifes boss has to retire before anyone gets a chance to "progress" and the core job is pumping stats and code numbers into databases 🙄

Son was in a similar position and has been really lucky in that he has moved from electrical eng into civil eng and his new employer is paying for his degree and there is a path mapped out for him to become a partner in the business at some point in the future 😀

Me? When I got fed up working as a motor mech I nearly became a postman but ended up working in a factory as a maint tech. I am very happy not to have any feet on any rung of any ladder when observing what managers have to go through and being stuck in front of a pc most of the day ❗
Something to be said for being uneducated and lacking in ambition 🙄

My daughter is a teacher and has no wish to become a head teacher because she would want to sack all her duff colleagues and she knows that the unions/ed dept would not support her ❗

It's a perfectly reasonable thing to do- the question is, is your boss perfectly reasonable? My last couple before this one were frankly demented and would have instantly sought out the most twisted interpretation and acted as though it was the only possible one. (*) Needs a bit of caution really. But boredom's an insidious problem, it really can undermine everything around it.

I would be careful, you might end up getting a load more work and stress without any extra pay. Could you find something to do (possibly outside of work) to interest you until the rut clears?
