My dad reckons it is but I can't find anything to say he's right... Reason I ask is that my car's outside his house, stuck in first gear with no clutch, bang on top of a speed cushion. The road's clear, nothing's obstructed at all, in fact we used to park there for years before they installed the bumps. I can't move the car without grindingly starting it in first, which I don't really want to do for obvious reasons... But it'll be there for a week or so and it'd be just my luck to get a ticket!

Well there's one outside my house with an unbroken white line on it, which I think means that I shouldn't park there. But I do. And I haven't been towed yet...

No, it's just to deliniate the bump, don't worry. Common sense would still apply though of course, I'm assuming it's not in a tight area or one with a crossing on it.

It's legal I think but if there are better places to park then I would use them 🙂 Someone near me does this (on a reasonably busy road) and cars have to go completely on the other side of the road to get past which causes tailbacks etc.

What the hell is a speed cushion? Is that the proper name for those elephant droppings I see sometimes?

But doesn't a solid white line mark the end of the carriageway so to be (even partially) on the wrong side of one means you are off the carriageway and therefore parked illegally?

It's about 5 feet from the driveway but it'd be fun getting it in there with no clutch  TBH it's as good as parking space as any, perfectly safe. Oh, the bumps don't have white lines surrounding them, just sharkfins.

Since when is parking off the carriageway illegal? Surely it's better than being ON it? What about all the millions of small pull-ins all over the country?

To the OP - rock the car and try and get it into neutral. Can't see why it wouldn't work...

I am thinking solid white lines on the sides of roads (which become broken at pull-ins). I believe it is illegal to cross them.

Just found this description so it appears it is okay to cross this type of line...
It is sign 1012.1 TSGD 2002

Edge of carriageway available for through traffic other than at a road junction,

exit from private drive onto a public road or

layby or

back edge of hardshoulder or

edge of footway where it passes over a railway or tramway crossing.

Unlike a double line in the centre of the road there is no penalty involved if one straddles.

It is simply........an edge of carriageway marking.

If its not one of those speed ramps that goes all the way across the road, NO, they are designed to allow ambualances to pass over them without disturbing the treatment going on in them, So Please dont park on them.

Unless they want to get 2 ambulances up, side by side, simultaneously it's not going to be a problem 😕
