Had the first barby of the year on Saturday. By the smell of it, so did everyone else in the UK

Meat undercooked? Au Contra-ire. Burnt to a crisp 😀

Gas BBQ, so use it all year round - also in Scotland. During the winter was using it whilst standing in snow. Roast chicken last night, steaks Friday night and roast venison the previous Sunday. BBQ with a lid is the way to do venison because it keeps it so moist.

Can't understand the gas barbecue - might as well stick it under the grill. No charcoal, no point IMO.

Or a proper Weber with the vents. Either way, proper BBQ cooking is ace!

We BBQ all year, rotisserie chickens with a roasting tray of taters underneath, bit of oil and loads of rosemary - perfect. Venison, butterflied lambs legs, steak. All good, doesn't matter the weather just put a jacket on !

checked the bbq yesterday and it turns out that mr housemate and friends had a bbq last year and didnt clean it afterwards... so its been sitting under a cover all winter growing mould.

this weekend will involve some cleaning, bleaching and burning to get it back up to standards then its time for periperi chicken kebabs.

You can under cook meat ?

never had uncooked sausages of chicken? mmmmm food poisoning nomnomnom

We had a late start to the season and had our first 2 weekends ago. If you can cook then you neither under or overcook anything. Being prepared to wait for the coals to reach cooking temperature is the real key and keeping a water spray on had will prevent charred offerings.

First year I've actually owned my own bbq so I guess I can use it whenever I fancy.

Bit of mould phil - adds to the flavour 🙂

see for me bbqs are social events involving friends visiting and lazy afternoons and evenings in the sun, this usually means a surplus in food and a fatter belly with each bbq.

this year i hope to keep up with my healthier eating push and the temptation to ride instead of sit around in the sun is making my legs itch for the woods as i type... so my relationship with the bbq will have to change... less food, healthier food and always after a ride.

No different to an oven really. 20 mins on full power to get it up to temperature then knock it down to about 25% to keep the temp at about 160 deg. Cooks about 15% quicker than in the oven

Can't understand the gas barbecue - might as well stick it under the grill. No charcoal, no point IMO.

Common misconception. Charcoal is totally odourless and imparts no flavour to what's being cooked whatsoever. In a BBQ fat melts off the meat, drips onto the hot coals and vapourises. It's this vapourised fat that gives the BBQ flavour. Decent gas BBQ's work by the gas heating artificial coals, the heat from which cooks the meat. The fat drips from the meat onto these coals and vapourises in exactly the same way as charcoal - so exactly the same taste effect.

If you don't believe me Google it. That's how I got converted to gas

Phil - take some food into the woods with you, make a fire then barbecue out there.

In Finland they provide huts for this purpose - one side a cooking grill, the other side seating to sit around the fire and warm yourself in the winter.

+1 for Captain Mainwaring. Incidentally can you put wood chips on the artificial coals without buggering things up? From memory there's not much under the burners so ash could be cleaned out..?

Unfortunately it doesn't work - because there is still a small flame from the gas they just burn off and have no effect. What is meant to work is a small iron container to put over the "coals" which you put the wood chips in. Got one with the BBQ but it doesn't work - doesn't seem to get hot enough

Wow, never had to $%^& about lighting a BBQ either, load coals into the funnel, put a lighter block below and light, walk away, come back when the meat is prepared and it's ready.
