In recent years I've noticed DIY stores starting to sell various types of safes for home use. Given a neighbour was recently burgled in I'm considering investing, what's best? ... key, electric, fire/water, and where best to install given I have no concrete floors - except in the garage.

I have a gun safe, it's upstairs bolted to the floorboards and two solid walls with hilti bolts, secure enough to satisfy the old bill.
Security wise it has 2 seperate 5 lever keys and a compartment inside with another 5 lever key.
Not only is it big enough for my gun and cartridges it can also accommodate other bits and pieces I don't want to lose.

Unless you have something irreplaceable I think they are a waste of money and just leave the risk of your house being damaged more trying to get to it.

Of course a gun cupboard is a different situation.

Yep - I have a couple - all the finance stuff / documents (passports, driving licenses, spare keys, receipts) etc are in them. Backups of all my computers / photos are also in there.

If some scally breaks in they can nick the computer but can't get anything with my name on to steal my ID.

My Dad does the same and was broken into, they took the safe up the garden and attempted to break in with a garden spade and fork - barely scratched the paint. The police carried it back in the house for him 🙂

Highly recommended...

And you can put your stylus in there when friends come round.
