They're not on strike though are they, silly
The public service pay was increased to match private sector pay back in the day of Celtic Tiger. Since then most private sector workers have had cuts in their pay, been cut back to 4 (or less) day week, or been made redundant. Public sector also have "jobs for life" meaning the govt can't make them redundant. The public sector have had an effective pay cut, but it is going into their pension pot so it is not money lost in the long run. As is often the case the unions are looking out for their members but at the expense of any and everyone else. Ireland is in a massive financial hole and actions like this are not forward thinking as it will not help the country long term. Everything is overpriced in Ireland and as such people were paid too much (I got a pay rise moving from a central London "boutique" engineering practice to a small practice in Kinsale 2 years ago). Until some of this can be unravelled sadly I will be back in the UK. I would love to be back (especially as Jnr P is about to come into existence and Ireland seems a much nicer place to bring up kids)
