Does anyone actually believe they were "innocently" hiking the border between Iraq and Iran? And in the remote possibility that it was an innocent mistake, would it not be better if Iran had aided Darwinism in removing them from the gene-pool.

Yes? Maybe they just wanted an adventure.

And in the remote possibility that it was an innocent mistake, would it not be better if Iran had aided Darwinism in removing them from the gene-pool.

Is it just an internet hard-man act or are you genuinely really uncaring in real life?

So, just for clarity. You clearly advocate capital punishment for trespassing?

No, I am pretty sure they were there illegally on government "business". Wonder what the US had to bargain with to get their release?

Does anyone believe they were actually over the Iran border, or as per the UK sailors the other year the Iranians just did as the pleased...

1 million people killed in iraq in the last 10 years, Americans are hated as invaders, the view in iran of Americans is probably even worse. In the unlikely event that they are not spies then the "adventure" they were looking for included the possibility of death, their choice their act of stupidity.

Not saying it does, just setting the political background for the area that they decided to "innocently" hike through.

My parents were hitching arround there arround the time of the Iranian Revolution. Last I checked my dad works for the National Trust and my Mums a teaching assistant. Neither has ever worked for MI6 or the CIA to my knowlage!

Of course they wouldn't tell you ๐Ÿ˜‰

Very different circumstances, very different times.

That's all covered in the manual to being a spy, chapter 2, paragraph 4 don't tell your kids you are a spy.

"their act of stupidity"

If I were you I would not be so keen on advocating capital punishment for stupidity.

just setting the political background for the area that they decided to "innocently" hike through

1) IK has been significantly more stable than "Arab" Iraq since 1992-ish and has a functioning state apparatus. Tourists have been visiting throughout. You can actually fly to Manchester from Sulaymaniyah: however, that journey is not recommended as the destination is extremely dangerous.

2) the Ahmed Awa waterfalls are a popular day trip from Sulaymaniyah.

3) I don't think anyone's suggesting that going mapless, GPSless and directionless in hilly Iranian border areas is a very prudent way to spend your holidays. But it's not as simple as saying "anyone who goes hiking in IK is a spy or deserves to be killed".
