my sis gave me her ipod shuffle thingy as she's got one of the iphones. She reckons it never came with much instructions and what happened to them is anybodys guess.
She has a few albums on ( not all my taste) so I tried to plug into the pc and put some of my own stuff on, however it won't speak to me, is there a secret handshake or software you nee to make things simple?
Its about 2-3 years old she reckons but they've only just recently brought out a newer version of it.
I'm sure I'll hardly use it but it would be nice to know how to get rid of 3 snow patrol albums and put some other stuff on.
I dont mean to come across as condescending or patronising, as I dont know how much you know about them. But you have to have itunes installed for it to do anything.
You can find this on the apples website and download from there the version that fits your computers needs.
Hope this helps.
I thought that as well however I already have it on the pc, don't know why I think the daughter put it on cos she thought she was getting an ipod last Christmas.
I tried loading albums that i have on my pc onto the ipod but it didn't work, maybe thats where I'm going wrong and should be 'buying' them from itunes. I suppose it would be easier to get one of the daughters pals to come round and do it for me, however that could ruin my cred with 'the kids' havin said that it amounts to shit anyway, whats to loose.
Open itunes and then connect the shuffle.
The shuffle should then 'appear' in the left hand panel in itunes.
If it's a Shuffle then it's possible that it's actually full up, they only hold a couple of Gig at best. If you set iTunes so that the Shuffle auto-fills on connection, either from the iTunes library or from an established playlist set up to the maximum capacity of the Shuffle. She's right about the lack of instructions; with most 'Pods there's little you need to know to get started. If you set iTunes to manually manage music and video then you can drag and drop whatever tracks you want from iTunes onto the iPod. You don't need to buy music from iTunes, you just shove a cd into the computer, wait for the disc to be read and track info to download from Gracenote, then click the Import CD at the bottom right of the window. Repeat as desired. It defaults to AAC+ at 128Kb, which is fine for a Shuffle, but you can set import characteristics to MP3 and bitrate to 320Kb which is much better for higher capacity Pods, in case you go for a Nano, Classic or Touch.
Has it previously been used with a mac? if so, you'll need to reformat it so it will play with a pc.
Great when they're working, absolutely shite when they're not (sums up apple really). My sister "upgraded" to itunes 10 which isn't compatible with her ipod nano of the latest generation.
_tom_, are you sure? It seems to work fine with my 2004ish Mini. Getting it installed (iT10) took a lot of hassle though...
It seems to work on other computers but not on hers. It was working well before with the older version of itunes but just not at all now. I was considering the new ipod touch 4 but think I'll give it a miss unless the apple "genius" can sort this mess out!
cheers all, sounds like a job for tomorrow night

A great many answers can be had here.
_tom_, your remark applies to any item of consumer electronics produced in their millions. Things can and do go wrong. I've used Apple products since the mid Nineties, both for work and pleasure, and, while I've had the occasional issue, most recently trying to upgrade my laptop's OS to a level that my new iPhone 4 could connect to left me frazzled, but then my laptop's nearly eight years old. Recently at work there was a row of ten dead Wintel PC's none of which was more than two years old. Shit happens. It's often operator error, but software upgrades can and do corrupt, that's what caused my problem, iTunes 10 had become corrupted during upgrade and couldn't see a mobile device. Erasing iTunes then downloading a fresh copy and reinstalling it cured the problem instantly.
