there is a way to do it, i had the same problem last summer and there were some instructions in the help bit on the apple site. You'll lose all your play lists and song ratings i think. It involves something to do with putting your ipod in disc mode. Have a google around and look on the apple help bit. I'd try find it for you now but in a bit of a rush at work!! I'm sure someone else will post in a bit though

The ilounge site is great for tips on this sort of thing.

I bought some online software they recommended and pressed the button saying "would you like to download your ipod to itunes".

Job done.

Funk knows what it was though, it's on the PC at home.

What ever you do, don't connect the ipod to itunes on the re-built laptop as it will try to overwrite (format) the iPod. There are a load of freeware utils about to copy the contents onto your hard disk. You can then re-import onto you new copy of itunes, get all your album artwork etc. and then wipe and re-sync the ipod.

Crisp Softies do a version called iPod.iTunes that costs about $30. This may be more flexible than the Apple version.

iPod.iTunes is what I used after another I got from tinyurl proved to be utterly useless. iPod.iTunes is around £25 and is really worth it, it totally automates the process and makes sure iTunes doesn't autosync with your iPod which would wipe everything off it.
