When listening to the iPod on the iPhone 3G using the built in speakers only the left one seems to work, is this normal or has one of my speakers given up the ghost?
Any way to test the speakers as I would have expected playback to be stereo?

yes. the right one is the microphone.

Same with the earphones, only one of them is an earphone, the other one's a mic too.
