how come i have just been billed for data roaming from o2
my iphones never had data roaming turned on as long as ive owned it - and ive just checked it is still off
ive used it on wifi abroad for the last 12 months with no issue - this month they have billed me ..... not a huge ammount but i just want it nipped in the bud as my company wont pay for data as thats deemed personal usage .....
ive emailed o2 as well - but has anyone else experianced this and what was your outcome with them ?

cheers bruce
ive emailed them my case anyway
i never recieved any texts regards roaming
got an email back to the tune of "evn though data roaming is off your phone can still data roam in the background
ive emailed back saying thats very dissapointing that a phone has that option yet is still able to access the 3g network abroad and that ive never seen it mentioned in any litrature regarding roaming or the iphone .
will se what their reply is ....
seemingly when i go abroad i have to turn off all celular data every time to ensure it wont happen again - why bother having an data roaming option in that case .....

This sounds like utter weasely bollix from O2.
I'd point them to their own website that ONLY recommends turning Data Roaming off to avoid charges. Here's the nice "O2 Guru TV" video they have:
No mention of doing anything else.
And here is the web page which says:
How do I switch off Data Roaming?
Simple, just tap "Settings" on your iPhone, select "General" then "Network" and simply slide "Data Roaming" to off.
Seems pretty clear to me.
why bother having an data roaming option in that case .....
Exactly. If the Data Roaming option doesn't control Data Roaming then what is it for??

I was somewhat hacked off by this discovery. I tend to switch off 3G anyway before I get on the plane but you'd hope the roaming switch would cover any forgetfulness. Don't think it's restricted to O2 either, guess it's an iPhone fault.
I found (to my cost) that when you are in southern Spain near Gibraltar safe and sound on a European network suddenly you can find yourself connected to MarocTel (it's only about 5 miles away) and pay enormous rates because your calls are being routed through Africa.

Oddly I've been abroad several times with my iPhone (also on O2), used it extensively (with data roaming turned off) and never been charged for data.
Intermittent fault maybe? I guess maybe some apps might have bugs in them that mean they don't respect the setting, but you'd think that kind of thing couldn't be overridden from inside an app.
Just to back that up, I also used my iPhone (also O2) abroad a fair bit (with the data roaming option turned off) and never got billed for any data roaming. I wonder if you've got an app that ignores the setting? Is your phone jailbroken?
My new contract has 25mb of roaming a month so hopefully no dramas like this in the future for me- pain though.
Slight hijack - I've been using an old jailbroken iphone 3g up until now but when the 4s arrives I don't want to jailbreak it (not sure you can). A cydia app, SBSettings gave you instant access to turning off and on 3g, data, wifi, bluetooth, location, airplane mode and adjust screen brightness etc with a single swipe and without hunting back through the settings options. Is there anything similar from the "legit" apps as I'll miss that?
phone is not jailbroken

Nope. Legit apps don't get access to settings as they run in a "sandbox" to prevent them doing nasty things.
You're quite right though - SBSettings is one of the few good reasons I've seen to jailbreak.
Oh well - maybe ios5 will make the process less tedious. I'm a habitual fiddler as I live in a dodgy signal area and running phone with 3g on drains the battery quickly and reduces signal strength and only turning wifi on when I need it seems to make the battery last much longer too. Maybe the new phone will be so much better in the battery dept I'll feel less inclined.
Its not the phone - its the operator!
I had a similar thing with Orange - although when I contacted them they said i hadnt turned it off (but I had turned data roaing off)
However, they refuded it as a gesture of goodwill!!!
no reply as yet - i do look forward to it.
its not a huge ammount but im a bit peeved at the way they are handling it that im going to pursue it.... when i get back to the uk mind.
