I have just found myself dragged into the slightly pretentious world of the "smart" phone.

Tell me, which apps do I need on my iPhone?

Angry Birds (worth 59p for the full version)
iBBQ

Goodreader (storing documents/etc on your phone so you don't have to download them each time - great for manuals, documents (eg travel insurance), maps, etc).

Angry Birds / Cut The Rope / Flight Control are all well worth 59p each to kill time.

Met Office app for weather (free)

National Rail Train Times is a rip-off but worthwhile if you use trains a lot.

Everything else is more about whatever niche things you're into.

VLC remote if you have a media computer

imdb if you're a film geek

blevelfree - spirit level

photobucket uploader

ispreadsheet

PS express - photoshop - actually very useful for lightening photos.

Orbital - great game (google it - IIRC you can play it on their website on your computer)

Galcon labs - great, quick strategy type game

Openmaps is good too. It displays OpenStreetMap and you can switch it to cycle mode to see all the cycle paths etc.. Its user generated content though, so not perfect.

You can get a Tricorder one, it scans for M class planets and makes all the peeping noises.

Plugplayer lets you stream media from a network drive direct (over wifi) to your touch/phone. Save downloading (but only works at home).

I find Opera browser excellent for reading forums as 90% of the time you don't really need to see the images and Opera allows you to switch off images (although you can view individual images if you want.
It's now the browser I use nearly exclusively.

I find Opera browser excellent for reading forums

I was a big fan, even with the bugs, but for some reason they haven't updated it for the Retina display so it looks awful on the iPhone 4.

I never really got on with Opera - strangely I prefer the Opera browser even though it really annoyingly doesn't have a find function (though thanks to Graham S for highlighting bookmarklets to me as a workaround!)
