About a year old just stopped connecting, is it broke?

It's like national iphone day in here today. Is the wifi button greyed out? If not likely a loose screw if you've done a network settings reset

Do a network settings reset and then a hard restart by holding the home button and power button until the apple logo appears. The. Try reconnecting.

Also sounds daft but have you tried restarting your router as well

current wife's 4s had this issue, apple replaced the handset after I pointed out that it was a fault that arose after a software (iOS) upgrade

This is a widely reported fault and seems to relate to software upgrade, other than the reset outlined above, apparently putting it in the freezer can help as well, we haven't tried this yet.

This always happens to me when I change iPhones, it just will not connect to any wifi. As has been said above, the thing that fixes it for me is:

Do a network settings reset and then a hard restart by holding the home button and power button until the apple logo appears

I just got the same issue (18 month old 4S) after trying the network setting reset, phone restart, re-install software I finally fixed it with the hairdryer method. Remarkable. Seems to me there is definitely an issue with these phones (had trouble free 3, 3G and 4), a combination of hardware and software issue is my feeling. The connection between OS update and issue is I beleve due to hose who use WiFi to download the software updates thus "stressing out" the wifi chip. I got the dreaded grey-out after normal use and the Bluetooth was fine.
