Got a 3GS that is out of contract tomorrow. I spoke to O2 last week and they agreed to give me a iphone4 for free on my 35 pm contract (although I'm aware it now contains data restrictions)
The question is would you take a 4 now or wait and see what happens with the 4s/5? I won't be paying £100 + for the new one anyway but they may change the 4 as they did with the 3GS when the 4 came out when they made it reduced GB capacity.
And no to BB and android before you say anything.
When is the 5 coming out? Can you wait that long?
Take the 4 now and flog it if the 5 turns out to be the next Jesus phone. O2 will unlock, for free, the 4 you get now as long as you see out the contract. Buy the 5 from Apple unlocked partly funded by what yous sell the 4 for if you choose that route.
If the the 5 turns out to be the 4s just keep the 4.
I'm on a 3G on a cheapo O2 tariff post 18months and I'm waiting for the 5. There is a reason all the shops are offering deals on the4 right now.

I reckon the 5 will be about 150 on a 35ppm plan which is jut daft so will get a 4 for free now thanks.
Wife is getting 3GS so she can join the smartphone revolution, about time too.
Get the 4. As above, if you put a screen cover on it and a cheap case and keep it pristine then if the 5 turned out to be a real cracker then you'll be able to get a really good price on the 4. The 4 is a damn good phone, the camera is brilliant, and it's nice and solid in the hand. You can't go wrong, really.
My contract runs until next May, so I'm going to wait until the 6 comes out next September/October.
Drop to a SIM only tariff, put your saved money into a pot for when the 5 comes out, Real Soon Now.
Just because you're out of contract doesn't mean you have to upgrade; that's what They want you to do.

Rumour is 7th sept - hardly worth buying a 4 for the sake of 3 weeks. Besides even if you wait til the 5 us out and still go for a 4 - they'll be cheaper then. Which also means you'll get less for a near new second hand 4 then as well.
Whatever you do install viewranger. Proper gps (works without phone signal) and uses ordnance survey maps. I'm on a 3GS simplicity month on month thingy, very much waiting to see what the ip5 is about too!
