Looking at buying the wife a Ipad for christmas - wondering if will have the same apppeal overtime as nice new laptop! Obviously the Ipad scores big on impressions but say 6 months down the line once the novelty has worn off. Is the Ipad a functionally good bit of kit for everyday stuff with it not having a usb port or the likes?
Opinions please

You really need a computer as well, its the easiest way to get music, videos, photos etc onto the Ipad.

Should have said, we currently have a laptop and desktop for everyday tasks. Fear is the Ipad will be pushed to the side very quickly therfore a costly mistake...

I have found that I use my iMac less now and the iPad more, had mine 3 months and it still gets used everyday for several hours, it great to take to work on boring night shifts to watch movies, check email, check STW etc etc.

I barely use my laptop at home anymore. Go for the iPad.

My father in law had us Archos media player stolen on holiday, I convinced him to replace it with a iPad!

He grumbled alot saying its expensive and he only wanted it to play movies on whilst away on holiday

3 months on and he has a worrying obsession with it, uses it for email, books, movies, web browsing, addicted to words with friends, sports and other various apps

Get one you won't regret it

Only if your importing old stuff, if it's from iTunes you've bought in the past or anything new the iPad will download it.

They are very good and handy for loads of things, great as an addition to a computer for quick reference surfing websites, nifty apps, movies and music. My kids use it for homework too the Mrs was chuffed to see she can get Good Food Mag on it too.

A great xmas present I'd say, that's what our was for but give it to the Mrs early as she was lying in bed ill for a few days last month.

The iPad is very, very good at what it does. I've had mine since they were first launched and it still gets used every day. Do bear in mind however, that it's not a laptop and should not be considered as such. I've had countless arguments with people at work when they say it hasn't got SD slot, USB slot, Optical drive, etc. If that's what they need, then they should go get a laptop and not say an iPad is crap 'cos it won't do what it's not designed to do.

That said I have got the camera connection kit which gives a USB & SD interface so images are easy to get on it. I also have one of the rather lovely Apple bluetooth keyboards to go with it should I feel the need to do a lot of typing on it.

Anyway, they are ace. Get it!

It depends what you want to do with it as to whether its better than a laptop.

I bought one to see if it would replace my laptop, I made a conscious effort to use the pad rather than a laptop for two weeks but i found theres loads of things that I do that a laptop does far better than the pad.

I think for consuming media on the move, ie films, music, books, they're great, and for casual web surfing in front of the TV or on the move, theyre mostly ok, but there are loads of websites that dont work properley.

For anything else I would choose to use a laptop, eg I find entering more than a couple of lines of text especially clumsy, which is why mine now gathers dust.

Its all about how you would use it that will determine how useful you'll find it.

As above. It isn't a substitute for a pc or mac at home, but unless you have to do lots of text entry on the move on it the iPad is an awesome complement to them. I cannot see now why I would need a laptop ever again.

I regret buying the ipad over a netbook. Its a good toy but not good for anything work related. Its chunkier too once you add a decent cover.
I find when I travel I now find myself taking both my laptop and ipad whereas the idea was that it would replace the computer for short periods.
Its not uncommon too going by the amount of people I see with both at airport security checks.
Ipads are great for games, entertainment and internet browsing but its not a good work tool.
