I have been told 'dress to impress'.

Seriously, WTF does that mean? It's a 40th party but it is 'bring your own' drinks. But then it is at a quite nice hotel apparently.

The problem being is that I don't really have any dressy clothes, other than a 10+ year old suit and I don't really want to spend a load on buying stuff for this one party.

Nobody else will bother to dress up, just go as you see fit.

what would impress you? if you saw another chap what would make you think 'that looks smart' or failing that.... smartish jeans and a shirt, they're not going to throw you out if you've been invited.

Seriously, WTF does that mean?

if you can't work it out, ask the host.

If you don't like them, why go. If you do, i'm sure they'll tell you.

I find a 70s safari suit as worn by Roger Moore covers most eventualities...

I wouldn't worry about it, wear what you were going to wear before you read the invite

The phrase 'Dress to impress' should be treated with the utmost disdain 🙂

Just remove all the leftover food from the pockets of your suit, wipe the stains of the trousers and you're good to go.

Best party outfit is cover yourself top to toe in bin bags including a binbagaclava wound tight with sellotape, inflate additional bin bag and stick to your arse, wrap two sticks in bin bags and stick them to you middle, put on some deelie boppers - Ta da! - an ant.

Isn't dress to impress one up from

"wear what ever you want"

and just below,

"no jeans"

?

Go with something subtle but eyecatching.

My wife is asking for clarity, I thought it would be more amusing to post here.

And I like them. A lot. Looking forward to the night out but have nooooo idea what to wear.

How about my late dad's really cool retro 70s leather jacket with a really smart shirt n tie and my best jeans? (Saying that, my best jeans are still only from TK Maxx)....

Whatever you choose, make sure that each individual item is smart, but not remotely relevant to the whole ensemble.

For example, mustard cords, one of those ruffled DJ shirts, black oxfords (with spats) and a top hat.

It is one of my prized possessions and usually goes down really well but it feels a bit more suitable for a night out in trendy bars than a 'dress to impress' event (whatever that is).

I think you're supposed to shape it up for the big time.

just wear some scuffed pointy brown shoes, overlong jeans with superfluous stitching/pocket detail and a shirt with a large collar thats unfitted so it billows over the top of your waistband, either that or don't tuck it in and stand there clutching a bottle of imported lager looking bored. seems to work for most blokes.

If it ain't Elton John's 50th birthday outfit, it would have to be Blackadder's Black Russian Codpiece........

I bought a jalaba and a few prayer hats in N Africa a few years ago. I'd be tempted to wear them. And a rucksack. That would at least leave an impression.

the last fancy dress party I went to years ago was also in a hotel but it ended up in a bit of a nasty night as the manager got a slightly bit irate at two guests when he found out what they had come as..

Fred & Rose West

(true story)
