I listen to a lot of stuff on the BBC radio player. It's downloaded and not streamed.
It sounds better from an ipad than an iPhone. It still sounds really tinny and fizzy around the edges.
Should I attempt to improve the the device that plays the music or the speaker end of it?
What gives you best results?

iPlayer through iPad streamed to telly and hi-fi through an Apple TV sounds pretty decent.
Never seems quite as good as FM
i have an expensive roberts streaming one and it sounds fine using the internet - no discernible difference between it and DAB or using a music player or linking to my saved music.
I have no experience of apple products so I cannot advise but sounds like * the ipad has a better speaker than the phone

FM is shite, unless you’ve got a fancy receiver with a good high-gain antenna. I’ve got a couple of DAB/FM radios which get switched between Radio 2 on FM and 6Music on DAB, because my g/f often prefers R2, and can’t be arsed with learning how to use the remote to scroll up or down to change channels, but it shows clearly just how shonky FM is by comparison to DAB, it’s fuzzy-sounding with no depth, and on a car radio it’s even worse, the radios can’t keep up with the station changing frequency as the car moves, and having to keep pressing the scan button to find a station is a royal PITA, and again the sound quality is rubbish, fuzzy, distorted and constantly fading in and out, whereas listening via DAB means once a station is located, it’s there for the entirety of a journey, and when that journey is frequently 160-220 miles it makes a big difference: I’ve picked up a car in Cornwall with an FM-only radio, that would not stay in tune, and had no USB input, (not that USB is always a help, it’s often incapable of charging a modern smartphone if it’s being used for satnav), and drove for over three hours in silence, rather than try to listen to a shitty FM radio. And I’ll add that few cars I drive are older than three years, often two or less, but some still have crap FM.
I got my first DAB car unit around six or seven years ago, cost around £100 with fitting, and it was a revelation, I couldn’t get a consistent FM signal on the Sony unit I had fitted to my Puma in 2003, I lost the Radio 1/2 signal four miles from home, on the way to Bath, and didn’t get it again until close to the city centre; Bath is 12 miles away! I gave up, used minidisc compilations instead. FM hasn’t got any better.
Funnily enough FM sounds superb chez Slowoldman. But then it's a decent hi-fi with a decent aerial tuned to Radio 3. I agree though that DAB has features which are suited to listening to music in the car, where sound quality takes a back seat.

Look for a Hitachi FT5500mkII on ebay for a very good FM tuner, will be very cheap.
Do you download from iplayer at the highest quality possible as it is quite a lot better than the standard download option?

Leaving my house (just off an A road, 10 miles from Southampton) and driving 30-odd miles along the M27 to Portsmouth, I lose signal at 3 points along the A road and twice along the M27 one of which is a stretch of over 5 miles.

+1 all things being equal, FM gives better sound quality. All those millions of DAB stations meant they had to lower the quality of the transmission, to fit them all in. It is more resilient than FM though, which may give the perception of being better
