Anyone got any tips for the shipping of a large ish item, say 6ft by 4ft by 3ft, from the US to the UK? It's a bit of a minefield. Doesn't need to be quick.

Quotes always seem to be vastly more expensive than rumoured to be possible.

Use a freight company and just buy the space.
We bought a cubic mt and just built 3 boxes to fit that.
50x50x100 cm and 100x100x50cm

You're supposed to get a lead-lined coffin and organise death certificates and all kind of other stuff before you airfreight Granny back home.

If it's not Granny, try Paisley Freight. They do international.

Otherwise there are hundreds of airfreight agents, try Davis Turner as one of the better ones.

Was roughly €200 from Canaries to Portsmouth door to door - there was no weight limit on that either - its all about the space it occupies.

Airfeight is calculated on weight or volume, whichever gives the airline the bigger return.

It's a bit of a minefield.

I think your bigger problem is likely to be the hazardous items regs.

I don't want air, unless it's cheaper. It needs to come in around £100 ish..

Try Interparcel - I've used them to send snowboards etc, very good.

www.shippi.com look pretty good - 150-200lbs should cover it, would be $200 ish.

Now the only question is, how to get a large item delivered, concealed until Christmas and then brought into the living room without my wife finding out...!

Proper international removal company? I emmigrated with Bournes international, you will get it part load in a container probably. Used a number of sea freight brokers too. Try googling that, been a while since I did any.

Where are your rumoured prices from? There are fixed costs for loading, collection, customs, import docs and then container fee's on top of that for each container move. If your doing one item as a part load then it's more expensive in some ways. Perhaps the price you're expecting is less than it costs.

I can send 100kg in that size to the Port of NY for 150 with these guys
https://www.transglobalexpress.co.uk/sea-freight/quote/quote/
but you will need to get it to the port, drop it off arrange collection and do all your own paperwork.

I want to ship FROM the US, which is making it a bit harder to organise.

It's still more than you reckon it needs to be, it was a reality check.

Try these forwarders,

www.agc.as
www.bronel.com
www.vls-uk.com

Your supplier would have to deliver in to one of their US receiving depots and you would pay the freight and UK clearance charges.

I don't have a supplier, that's the thing. It's just from my in-laws to us.

Mike, transgloablexpress could only offer me £1,800 - maybe I typed something in wrong!

Sea Freight direct (deliver to the port and collect from the port with all paperwork done by you) or door to door? How far from the sea are the inlaws?

I shipped 1m3 back from Oz a few years back for similar and we had 1t weight with that so it's possible but you need to do a lot of leg work.

They are near the Great Lakes, so could get to Chicago, Milwaukee etc. I could collect from Cardiff or Bristol, or even further if I conceed that I won't be able to conceal it from the Mrs 🙂

probably start with one of these http://www.shipping-worldwide.com/CHICAGO.HTM
you won't get to pick a destination port (probably be the one in Essex or something for a big ship) and from Chicago may ne a couple of swaps. Personally I think your being optimistic at £100. What is the range of quotes so far?
These guys did our door to door shipping http://bournesmoves.com/international-removals/
and the do international personal effects, it took 3-4 months to get it to Oz as they were waiting to fill the UK to Melbourne Container up.

Edit - a lot of this stuff is bespoke so expect to fill in a lot of forms and wait for a reply

I haven't got on the phone yet, trying to get a feel for the general cost so I don't end up wasting my time. Will have to though I suppose.

Your in-laws would be the US supplier, they should be liable for getting the freight to the local receiving depot. The UK clearing agent should be able to deliver to a place of your choosing to avoid your wife's prying eyes. The size of the package is approx 2m3.

This is a fair price from a local forwarder for 2m3,

Ex fob to door, we can offer £ 335 lump sum excluding clearance, Duty & VAT.

Have a word with Ron Fenton at STS Imports. They have a container come in from the US once a month. Sea freight is your only choice for anything like a sensible price.
