I am sure you can get a thing which clips into the floor brackets from the rear seats which then holds a bike by the fork dropout..however I cant find such a thing anywhere.
Anybody got any ideas?
Both Minoura and Saris do internal bike racks although I don't think they actually latch onto anything like the seat brackets. They are essentially strips of extruded aluminium with fork clamps on them that fit widthways across the inside of a car boot.
They work out quite expensive for what they are (£70 - £100) so I just bought a Sari fork mount off the interweb for £17 and knocked up a simple rack for one bike using a bit of old fence post I found in the shed. Simples.
VW do something as do Altera (?).
Have you tried any rear mounting racks ?
I have a Saris single which wobbles a bit - nothign short of a full ladder rack seems stable enough, unless its on a towbar.
Lay the bike flat and put some luggage on top to stop it bouncing around? (though obviously not on the mech!)
We have a Thule internal rack which fixs to the seat mounting things on out Scenic and it might work on a VW. It is OK but I had to substitute Delta fork clamps for the Thule ones as the thule clamps fouled the disk brakes. Look on wiggle as they used to have a couple of different fork mount inside bike racks that were univeral fit.
Bruce, that sounds like the very thing. I was after one that clips rather than needs bolts for speed and ease of use...and laziness and general cackhandedness..
tonyd, thats pretty much what I do just now but I have a horror vision of being decapitated by my own bike in a crash. I'm a bit obsessive about doing things properly too if truth be told 😳
