[#4035062]

as title suggests,
not doing mega distances or upping my pace,
in fact coming off the back off a rest period of steady 5/10K runs at 30/50mins marks....3 times a week (my marathon pace is 3h30)
but recently in the last 6 runs spanning just over 2 weeks (with a few steady rides in between) it been happening , they get stiffer through the day after the run, despite stretches.
no change in my nutrition - plenty of water/ electrolytes etc.

you know im thinking back and wondering if could be new training shoes, changed brand (asics to saucony) - neutral foot pattern. I am and always have been a big heel striker.
any help?

Google "exercise associated muscle cramp"

Good article from divefitness.com

There was another excellent article I read somewhere a whiles back but can't find it now.

Related more to stretching than hydration / electrolytes. Basically, muscles cramp when they are fatigued.Stretching relieves the cramp although you'll want to wait until the cramp has passed or better still stretch when you feel the cramp coming on, before it hits.

I'm not an expert but new trainers seems the most likely if other thngs are unchanged.

Could be just an adaption phase.

I get terrible cramp during the night after interval sessions. I can't find a good cause or cure other than hopping around the bedroom trying to stretch it out.

Given the training I have planned for this evening, I am expecting to be woken up by cramp several times during the night.

just seems to be part of life for me at the moment.

I don't think I'll be taking this piece of advice from that paper:
"avoiding strenuous exertion when performing activities"
😈

@adrianmurray - thanks for the links - some interesting reading.

bizarre thing is, ive been doing this for years and never had cramp until now, even on big runs and rides on the same day... - i think the suspect could be the new shoes - i did get them very very very cheap even though top branded and the right size and for my running style too, but you never know that the box may say something and the insides maybe be else.

i'm going to order my old asics again and see how that goes.

if it aint broke, i should not to tried and fix it!

thanks all

can be lots of things, but here a few suggestions,

1 : Running shoes are worn out, 250 miles is useally good limit to replace.

2: Lack of salt intake during the day,
3:Lack of water intake, not drinking enough throughout the day
4:Diet

But As you said 2,3,4 shouldnt affect you, but...

Sometimes if you not doing any exercise after a run and more importantly the DAY AFTER the run you will get BAD cramps, this is due to following.

Micro tears in muscles after hard runs need time to recover, and best way to recover is to do light exercise and get blood moving around the body and into those muscles that you have used.

So i suggest after doing a run, dont stop for the rest of the day, try going for a good walk or even better a cycle ride for about 30 mins,

The day after do some light exercise to get the bloody to those legs and that will reduce cramp.

Also are you doing dynamic stretches before running? or static?
