I’m now watching YouTube videos on drawing trying to recall from 30 years ago, some of the basics I still recall. I could never work out the seeing shapes in a object I want to draw though.

Far as i can make out it's picking out the rough shapes and building up the basic structures firstly then you can carve your drawing around those, lets you sense the shadows and volume and perspective of an object etc before you get too detailed.

Yeah I just can’t seem to be able to think that way, use to drive the teachers mad at school.

Yeah I just can’t seem to be able to think that way, use to drive the teachers mad at school.

Try a different method then. Try to draw something in under 30 seconds. Don't let your pencil touch the page for more than one second at a time. No ponderous lines, no contrived attempts to render.

Keep trying the same thing over and over. Start a new drawing each time.

Try something easy first. And you must post the results. Those are the rules.

Funny whenever I doodle that’s kind of what I do Jimjam, it probably shows in my video. Cheers for the tips.

Try quick slashing broad strokes. Far broader strokes. Try an organic shape like a skull or a leaf or something. Try and convey the shape with as few strokes as possible.

Let the line start and end before and after the shape you are trying to express....if that makes sense.

Cheers. Leaves I can kind of do, now a skull might take some practice.

I broke the gif above trying to upload a better quality one. 😳

thing is there as well drac, you're just drawing completely freehand, which is incredibly difficult, you need to use guidelines and stuff to get more accurate. (aye I appreciate this is still wonky, just posting it so drac can see the guides 😆 )

I tried to draw a skull earlier, tis murder. I actually drew a decent one when I was at college years ago, long since lost that skill. 😆

Don't worry about guidlines, and use a reference. Try to draw this skull using less that 20 marks.

[img] [/img]

The aim is to free up your movements and get fluid.

Getting there. Might have been a bit too hard, try and draw a leaf in 4 strokes. If you're not going to use pen or paper that app mentioned on page one is very good. Zen brush.

Thought I should post some of my efforts.

Thing that I've realised pretty quickly, that I don't have the same skills now that I used to have when I was drawing everyday (around 15 years ago. Also my hand gets tired now, no stamina.

Now though being older and wiser I just enjoy it.

Looks good everyone, keep going!

Here are some of mine first one:

One for division, took ages:

This evenings effort whilst STC is On:

Go for it, lets see them! Stick men are cool.

Think it should be re-stated that the whole point of this inktober thing is simply self improvement, and the repeated process of doing it day after day is the only way to improve.

I reckon all you that say you can't draw, should challenge yourselves.

Put pen to paper, don't think about it and put self criticism to the side, just keep drawing, don't look back. Then post up your stuff, at the end of the month have a look back and see how much you've improved. I bet you'll be surprised at your ability/improvement!

Here's him talking about starting it, and showing you his inktober stuff over the years.

[img] [/img] third attempt, frustrated by the perspective on the side of the car,I could see it but it's like my brain insisted on drawing it much more side on them it was, the wheels needed to be much more ellipsoid. My wife made much the same comment as Jimjam was saying above, in that I need to loosen up. (She did a level art). Going to have a go at the skull exercise, yours was fine Drac, was obvious what it was.

Yeah, my free flowing minimal marks skull looked pretty similar! Did some leaves and a flower trying to flow, then did the skull again.

I was thinking about this when on the bike today. I suppose ultimately what I was trying to say was ....swing your hands around like you are pretending to be an artist 😉

I got pretty bored with Head Lopper surprisingly quickly. Wish I'd gone for more of an action scene. Hey ho. Couldn't even be arsed taking another photograph when I realised that one was out of focus.

No. 7

Man, anything beyond even surfaces I'm utterly useless at, shading uneven surfaces is hard!

Think I'm gonny buy some brush pens and a range of tones see how I get on with those. The cross hatching patter I have no patience for, I think I'm done with that! Time to try and learn another style i think. f'd this right up. Shame as I thought the basic sketch was alright before I rubbed it out too, if a bit long in the vertical, I've always preferred pencils..

Looking good people. Keep it up, great to see people having a go who've never done it before, or trying new things.

I've moved away from my trusty dip pen and grabbed a brush.
The result being this:

Quickly underdrawn with pencil, then attacked with india ink and water. I forgot to begin with that india ink is waterproof so blending is a bit tricky (compared to water colour).

Enjoyed it though, also realised that pros use shorter brushes!

That Enterprise is superb.

It reminds me, the only vague art skills I ever had, I used to be into ASCII art. I once drew the NX-01 Enterprise from the prequel show, totally off-topic but I could post that if anyone cares?
