Or the one I recommended up there somewhere, from Argos, Breville again, choice of flat plates, traditional triangular pockets and even a waffle making bit.

I'm somewhat suspicious about the bluberry and strawberry garnish, but other than that you can't go wrong.

There’s going to be no garnishes going on, blueberry or otherwise

I think tomorrow’s lunch is going to be a mature cheddar, corned beef and onion toastie with Heinz tomato soup to dunk it in 😃

Finally made a nearly plant-based* Reuben toastie in the frying pan last week. The Gods smiled on us as I found some seitan (pastrami style) on offer, along with some vegan cheese. Had some pickles on the shelf and some sourdough in the freezer. Some vega mayo and mustard too. All the stars had aligned. It was ... ace. Really nice. Surprised me, as didn’t think I liked seitan.

Buttered the outer slices and whacked in a hot pan on low heat, flipped until golden outside and inners going gooey.

*I may also have nicked a bit of our dog’s (dairy) cheese that we use to hide his tablets in 😎

Gah, now want another and it’s fast-day

Filth delivered. Fast will wait.

You make cheese from dog's milk?

^ 🥁tish 🙂

tonight I made them with this for the first time:

Tastes like a very Cheddary, very processed, melted cheese. Perfect for burgers. Even the dog liked it. He sucked it off my fingers. Which was weird.

Had the most awesome toasted sandwich yesterday

Sourdough buttered
Home made salt beef
Sauerkraut
Cheese
Dijon mustard
Tabasco
Black pepper

Not strictly a toastie as just one piece of bread (like an open sandwich) then grilled

Thanks to P7eavan for making me laugh out loud

I bought a Breville non-stick flat plate toastie maker for Christmas, it's ace as you don't need butter to stop it sticking.

Best two toasties so far:

Tuna mayo and tomato
Haggis and edam cheese

Good point. Think I'll have a walk down and get some, seeing as they make the stuff about 400 yards away from my front door. They're still open for a variety of local goodies 😀

A timely relaunch of this thread, as last night's dinner was a bit of a freezer leftovers clearout from Christmas, so today's lunch may just be a sausage meat stuffing and cheesey leak toastie...

In related news ( (and it may have been mentioned earlier) I've just had a 4 way wrap- chicken, hallouni, tomato and bbq sauce - pretty damned good - if wasnt trying to shift timber I would have used meltable cheese and possibly bacon.
In case you aren't down with the kids you basically cut a wrap from the centre out and put a filling in a quarter by the cut then fold that quarter over add another filling and fold again until you have a layered triangle- few minutes in a frying pan with fry light to crisp up and get stuck in

I've seen the videos for these and wasnt sure if it was fad or real, will have to try now!

Not a toastie but today I cut a bagel in half, grilled the bottom, on the cut edge smeared BBQ sauce, chucked some grated cheese on it and pepperoni then put back under the grill to melt the cheese and it was bloody lovely!

@pop-larkin - what you've described there is apparently why we've just taken delivery of our new toastie-maker

Well, for other members of the household it is. I'm keeping it old school 😀

I reckon this would work quite well in a toasted sandwich (or anything with cheese really).

Beer, Bacon & Chilli Jam

Bought some at Christmas and it basically lasted two days. Soooo nice

We've been thinking about getting a toastie maker for a while, but I'm scared if I made it that easy, I might eat nothing else.

We've been "surviving" with a griddle pan, baking parchment, and a cast iron pan on top.

We went on holiday in september and one place we stayed in had a breville toastie maker.

It reminded me that they don't work very well. You end up with a semi-sealed (crimped shut) bread compartment with its contents generating vapour and any trapped air (in the bread, between the fillings) expanding as it heats. As the cheese melts, it drops, and the air rises, and as the air expands further, the pressure forces the melted cheese out of the seams, leaving you with a very cheesy worktop and a less cheesy bag of air and ham.

So if you're shopping, say no to that sort, get a Foreman grill type thing or a panini press.

Add me to the converted on the cheese/peanut butter/siracha thing. More surprisingly my wife agreed after she was very vocal about it being lunacy.

Couldn't be arsed to get the toastie maker out of the back of the cupboard so just used a frying pan. Flipped after about 3 minutes, another 3 minutes and perfect cheese and tomato toastie

I’ll just leave this here. Can’t comment on it until I’ve tried it, but I intend to try it at the first available opportunity, because it looks bloody great!

We always have homemade cottage pie that has cheese melted on the top and with baked beans on the side. Can see we will be trying that with the left overs next time we have any left over.
Could be along wait though as the girls usually go with seconds

Whe this thread has bobbed back up to the top, can I just thank whoever suggested corned beef in toasties - can't believe I wasted 51 years of my life without trying this!

With chilli jam and strong cheddar ftw.

Want something even simpler?

Toast bread in a regular toaster.
Add filling.
30 seconds on high in the microwave.

Proper Job!

No pockets.Virtually no cleaning up...no faff.

What’s for tea mother? Heretical, soggy, disappointment on toast?

@p7eaven (or anyone else) can you recommend a non-dairy cheese for a fussy 8 year old for toasties? He used to like cheddar but has not been impressed by the vegan cheeses we've tried. I guess something pretty plain and just a bit salty and tangy would be best.

This thread again! I bought a toastie maker when this first started. Best £5 I ever spent. Experimented for about a week like a mad scientist before hiding it away in disgust after putting on twelve stone. Gonna get it out again now. New recipes to be tested!
