@sl2000

Supermarkety options I’d probably say Sheese Cheddar. With fussy disclaimers. I’m not a big fan of vegan cheese in general.

Careful, hot when melted. Hotter than the sun!

Oakwood Smoked vegan cheese is pretty nice, but smokey.

There are a few grated mozzarella options, think Waitrose do one. Have fun!

^ 👍🏼

Looking at that website, I’ve never tried mild cheddar Sheese, but they recommend that for toasties, so maybe try there as a first stop

Corned beef toasties are so delicious. I'm a fussy git so just have that alone.
Butter the outside, leave it far too long so the toast is crunchy (not burnt) and a perfect meal.

Never had a problem cleaning, with cheese or beans or anything.

Secret is to heat it up and use a cold wet dishcloth to get all the now loose bits off.
Careful though as they get damn hot and the cloth warms up instantly.

Prompted by the thread, kind of, I've just ordered more Devils Mortar (British N'duja sausage, lush in a toastie with Mozzarella) and some nice ham. Anyone have any recommendations for some face punchingly strong mustard?

10 months later and i'm still making Peanut butter, sriracha and cheese toasties. It's evolved a little though to include spring onions and streaky bacon. Perfect mix now of sweet, spicy, salty.

As far as the breville vs panini press argument goes....well i'm using a sandwich iron and its doing a bloody good job!

Hey hey, it's this again! And in time for Toastie Season.

Cheese and pickle toasties are good, I've discovered
And cheese and haggis
And cheese and pizza sauce

And manchego is my new toastie cheese of choice

Another one i've made recently was pepperoni, mozzarella, red onion chutney, tomato and basil. I did contemplate using pizza dough instead of bread but stuck to proper white sliced in the end.

Ooh, missed this first time around. Are we allowed to use an electric sandwich toaster? Or does it have to be a real-flame shiny-steel hand-held poncy artisan affair? Asking for a friend.

It is indeed toastie season. I had my favourite on getting in from the pub the other night… corned beef, onion, Worcester sauce but replaced the usual mature cheddar with this beauty from Aldi…

Red Fox, red Leicester. It’s lush and makes perfect toasties!

I’m definitely giving manchego a go though

Yes

Or does it have to be a real-flame shiny-steel hand-held poncy artisan affair?

No. But doubtless someone will, and tell us about it.

Are quesadilla's allowed here ?

No need for your fancy breville with those monkeys - frying pan, a tortilla, cheese and whatever fabulous things / leftover gubbins that the fridge offers up

Oi! i'm using a handheld over a real flame, although theres no shiny steel, ponce or artisan involved. Just a scruffy looking bloke sitting next to a fire in the woods with twigs in his beard. 😀

There are more sinister things afoot you should be eyeing - I'm not the one putting Manchego in a toastie am I ?

Bought some sourdough last week to make posh cheese toasties which were reyt good. Wasn't organic artisan baked in an oven fuelled using charcoal made from wood harvested from the lower slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro sourdough though. It was from Sainsbury's, is that okay?

Coming back to this thread a couple of weeks ago I bought one of those new-ish design Brevilles with removable plates.
It ain't all that so far 🙁

Just found this...another user of the sandwich iron or carp fishing pan (not sure how carp fishermen kept these to themselves)
It lived in the camper for ages, but once the secret was out it is a regular in the kitchen now straight on the gas hob, makes a cracking toasted sarnie.

cheese chorizo and chilly jam coming up!

Did anyone pick up on Binners use of the term ‘pie’, describing content not entirely surrounded by pastry.

TRAITOR TO THE PIE CAUSE!

It might be nice bread but have a look at the ingredients, if it's got yeast in it's not sourdough and shouldn't really be called such. Most supermarket 'sourdough' isn't really.

https://www.sustainweb.org/blogs/sep18_sourfaux_september/

I'd also like to put in a shout for Tallegio cheese in a toastie - so delicious and tangy and gooey when it melts. 🤤

Ridge Monkey is very good but I reckon these make slightly better toasties: https://www.castironchimineas.co.uk/PieIrons/Square%20Pie%20Iron.html

I have to say for a special occasion I’m quite intrigued by the thought of a Wigmore cheese toastie…

Just had avocado, cheese, jalapeño and sundried tomato quesadillas for lunch. Do they count as a toasty?

Unpasteurized cheddar and black pudding trumps all.

Holy thread resurrection, Batman...

Just awakening this to report that the leftovers of Saturday's slow-cooked boeuf burgingnon with cheddar make for an awesome toastie...
